We got a report from our Buy & Sell section that yesterday a SmSh user received an email from the ‘Smart shanghai team’ saying his account might be suspended due to concerns about ‘the safety and integrity of the Smart shanghai community.’ This is fake news!! This email came after the user had decided to not sell shoes to a suspicious buyer who asked for his card information (the right thing to do!). More details and some tips to Buy & Sell safely after the jump.

*** A suspicious buyer has been trolling our Buy & Sell section, contacting users to buy goods, then asking for bank account info, then sending an email posing as the SmSh team when users have refused (there's even a botched SmSh logo at the top). The email threatens if you don't continue the deal, your account will be shut down. Here's part of the email in its original absurdity:

Dear Smart Shanghai User, We regret to inform you that your Smart shanghai account might be suspended due to concerns we have for the safety and integrity of the Smart shanghai community. "Abusing Smart shanghai" of the Smart shanghai User Agreement states, in part: "We may limit, suspend, or terminate our service and user accounts, prohibit access to our website, remove hosted content, and take technical and legal steps to keep users off the Site if we think that they are creating problems, possible legal liabilities, or acting inconsistently with the letter or spirit of our policies." This is to officially inform you again that we have resolved the issue regarding the status of the buyer of your item. We received a complain from this buyer that you have refused to proceed with a purchase process due to undisclosed reasons best known to you. Also note that we at Smart shanghai have taken steps in securing both you and the buyer by verifying the status of the buyer carefully. So you are required to continue with the deal and contact the buyer.

Yeah, no... So this email came from smart.shanghai@outlook.com important to note, all emails from us will come from an @smartshanghai.com address, and nothing else. Also, we'll never penalize you for not going through on a deal or insist you sell to another user, that's for sure a red flag. And dude… if you’re gonna try to be us at least get it right: SmartShanghai not Smart shanghai. Branding. The user has been blocked and a report was made to Outlook’s Abuse department. But just a friendly reminder this doesn't mean the waters are free and clear, make sure you are always alert for suspicious users and please report them directly to us. Remember: SmartShanghai's Buy & Sell is an online marketplace for individuals. We remove suspicious listings but cannot confirm the authenticity of every item, so use your best judgement when you make purchases. Never buy anything from anyone you haven't met in person. Do not transfer money, and do not share personal or bank account details with anyone. Stay vigilant people--then keep calm and buy & sell on.
