This Week's Tickets: Rent: The Musical, Shanghai Design Week, Wrestling & So Much Stage Stuff

By Aug 27, 2018 Stage
Man oh man is there a bunch of stuff happening in the latter half of this week. Apart from John Cena and Ronda Rousey at the Mercedes-Benz arena, Rent's 20th Anniversary performance, and the 2018 Design Week, there's also an absurd-sounding Michael Jackson holographic revival show and about half a dozen stage things for young and old. Slava's Snow Show sounds pretty sweet.

Acclaimed Spanish acting troupe Auments has created a stunning piece of shadow and multimedia theater with their children's play "The Shadows Thief." An emotionally dark, rich visual fairytale inspired by Adelbert von Chamisso’s "The Wonderful Story of Peter Schlemihl," it tells the story of a young girl and her shadow, which is stolen away by Mr. Malasombra. An exploration of self-confidence, friendship and our own desires and urges, the audience will be left guessing whether the young girl and her shadow will be able to defeat the shadowy Mr. Malasombra. The show combines visual and video art, dance, object theatre, experimental shadow theatre and rock music to create a fantastical journey, weaving live action in with surrealistic imagery. This 50-minute (no intermission) performance is perfect for children 3 years and older.

The King of Pop is back, in the only way that's scientifically possible at the moment. Maybe in 2057 he'll actually be back, but for now, we'll have to make do with holographic projections! Relive some of Michael Jackson's MTV appearances and live concerts, performing songs like "They Don't Care About Us," "Man in the Mirror" and, naturally, "Thriller," brought to life by a team of musical and technical professionals using hologram technology, supported by LED screens, light renderings and live performers. MJ may never have made it to mainland China before his passing, but here's the sort-of-next-best-thing.

SNOW SHOW has been dazzling critics across the world since 1993, reigniting the discipline of clowning for a new generation with an enchanting show-- or perhaps "cavalcade of controlled chaos" is more appropriate. Created, directed and staged by Slava Polunin and his collaborator Viktor Kramer, the talented performers engage the audience with everything from the tiniest subtleties of facial expressions, to theater-wide, extravagant snowstorms that envelope the audience in a blizzard! Variety said "Slava Polunin may well be the world’s greatest clown. He may even be the world’s greatest magician." Joyful, playful and guaranteed to bring a smile to even the most stoic audience member, Slava's Snow Show is a reminder that clowns are meant to be, y'know, fun!
