Last night, WeChat added a new feature that has the internet abuzz: Mini Programs. Essentially, Mini Programs are apps within an app -- that is, a light app that runs within WeChat. For example, you can RSVP a Mobike or call a DiDi ride with their respective Mini Programs. Find to how to get the feature on your WeChat after the jump.

*** If your friend hasn't sent you a Mini Program link yet, then the feature probably hasn't appeared on your Discover tab like so: In fact, getting a friend to share a Mini Program with you is the easiest way to get the feature. The other two ways involve searching for a Mini Program by typing the full name of the program in the WeChat search bar or by scanning a QR Code. Mobike's Mini Program is "摩拜单车" and Didi's is "滴滴出行DiDi". (Also make sure you have the latest version of WeChat.) Since this feature has just launched, we aren't aware of any English Mini Programs yet. Apps like Mobike, which have a full English app, are available only in Chinese in the Mini Program format. WeChat's Mini Programs makes apps shareable and bypasses the need to download an app from an app store. But you don't necessarily get all the features of a full app, and downloading an app was never that painful of a process anyway. So for now, you've just got one more thing people are going to be spamming your WeChat with. SmartShanghai doesn't have a Mini Program yet but we do have a wonderful and newly updated iPhone and Android app on their respective app stores. You can download that here.
