Market 101 is not bad, but it's not good either. The sandwiches are ok. I read that they are amazing, they are not. And the prices are quite high for mere sandwiches. It's similar prices to restaurants, but without the restaurant atmosphere. I hope Market 101 can remember... high prices doesn't meant the food is better! The service staff at the counter were nice enough though. They didn't have a bad attitude, they were actually helpful.

First off, I like the sandwiches here. Portion is big, meat/veggie/bread ratio is fairly good, and the smoked turkey is one of my favorites.

But how about having a bit of variety on the bread? The ciabatta works well as a vehicle, but must it apply to every single sandwich on the menu? It doesn't work particularly well on the Italian cold cut sandwich, and for the Cuban they just pressed the same bread in a griddle toaster (which actually came out pretty good...) Having just the addition of maybe two more sandwich specific breads would make it a much more legit sandwich shop.

And a 15 rmb reduction in price wouldn't hurt. The location is already a bit wonky, a slight price drop would send more customers it's way: 14 USD for a decent sandwich is a bit obscene.
    Still disappointing

I love sandwiches. Unfortunately I do not love miserable service, the prices, overly chewy meat and sweaty interiors.

I've been to Market by Goga with my friends twice, and the first time I had an awful experience, but at that time Market was just opening, and even though I had to sit through Brad Turley aggressively berating his staff in English when they clearly did not speak any, I decided to let it slide. Opening any food and beverage establishment is hard, and getting the kinks ironed out is why there are so many soft, hard, and grand openings.

But the food hasn't really changed, and the service hasn't really changed, and the temperature of place has skyrocketed. The sandwiches, as others have mentioned are big, but not huge. The roast beef is chewy, and in a sandwich this big, one chewy bit makes it very hard to eat. You're stuck sitting there slowly pulling away from the sandwich, as that string bit of roast beef slowly drags the entirety of the sandwich out between the bread and into your lap. The Italian Salami sandwich is a bit better, but some bresaola (which is delicious on it's own picked out!) is so tough that the other meats get dragged out just like in the previous case. Only the turkey is soft enough to chomp through in a single bite, and both times the turkey has been the star sandwich.

I'm somewhat confused about the service. Both times, 2 sandwiches took about 25 minutes to make. These were cold sandwiches. We were the only people there. I don't get it, but the inside of Market was boiling hot, so 25 minutes later I was sweating profusely and just decided to sit outside until they felt like finishing.

It's expensive. Whatever. I paid it.

After how good my experiences have been at Goga, which has well thought out dishes, decor and service I was severely disappointed.

I saw a glowing review on That's Shanghai on their seemingly overpriced roast beef sandwich, and decided to give it a try this afternoon; I was quite pleased with it!

The bread was nicely layered with an oily pesto paste on one side, and a mayo-based dressing on the other. In between were thinly slices of tomato, onion, lettuce, tossed in olive oil and red wine vinegar (back home we just called it oil and vinegar), and pretty good roast beef with american cheese. This one really hit the spot for me (I'm from New Jersey) and I would definitely come back to try the other offerings like the turkey sandwich and the breakfast croissant.

The price is a bit obnoxious if you translate it over to USDs ; it's essentially 14.50USD for a mediocre roast beef sandwich by home standards (this should cost no more than 7 bucks), but for over here, it's pretty fucking money.

70rmb for a tuna sandwich - no cheese and not toasted either.
    A bit salty.
Cash only (Goga style as always)
I'll stick to baker & spice

Quite frankly, I read an awesome review of this joint at Timeoutshanghai.com and they all hailed this restaurant as one of the best sandwich places in Shanghai. Yep, the article promised me a big, juicy and fat steak full of roast beef and size of a dog. So.. first I had to travel here, in hope of a good food, roughly 30 minutes and finally I get there. I pay 90 RMB for this Roast Beef Sandwich, right, and then I couldn't even get a fapiao, which I always need and get from other vendors in Shanghai. "Sorry, sir." the girl said in poor English "No have right now." Okay.. I went along, waited and finally, after 10 agonizing minutes, got my "big ass" sandwich. I wanted take-away and yes this one was possible. After all, when I get back to my apartment, the beef inside is quite chewy and hard to swallow. Not some quality beef if you ask me. Also the sauce inside was way too salty and there was not enough salad. In conclusion, I would never try this again and if there is truly someone who enjoys this kind of ghastly service with poor quality, I would claim them to be full of shit or just someone with an awful bad taste in food and customer service.
