Guyi is an institution of a Hunan restaurant in Shanghai, among both foreigners and locals, for its upscale environment and excellent fiery food, unaffected by local tastes. It's a step up from almost all other Hunan restaurants in Shanghai, and though quality has wavered in the past, is still a solid bet. Cumin-crusted ribs (ziran paigu) are their signature. No reservations after 6.30pm, so expect to wait.

Gu Yi is a good restaurant, no doubt. Their food is tasty and nicely presented. However, the prices are not accurately described on City Weekend or Smart Shanghai. Both place it in the "cheap eats" section, but clearly it is not such a place. Ribs will set you back 22rmb per piece (!) and most of the hot pot/ stewed dishes are 50+rmb. If you go as a couple, expect to pay closer to 200rmb to really get to taste the better dishes.

Good and clean for westerners, at westernized prices.

This little restaurant is very close to my home and now it becomes my cantine. the food is very tasty and a lot of choice for both chinese and westerns. The only thing is you always need to wait long time to get a table, sometimes it's frastrating.

I've been here twice now and both times, I was not disappointed. The food is consistently great and definitely worth the money and the wait (which can last up to an hour). The signature ribs are tender and juicy, lamb chops and prawn skewers are overpriced but are a hit with everyone and the hot pots are a must (we had the chicken and bamboo). We took advice from previous reviews and ordered those toffee banana balls for dessert - SO GOOD - I think I could have a cake made out of them. They've toned down the spiciness so I'm not sure how 'authentic' this place is but when the food's so damn good, who cares?

So if anyone read my last post, I'm on a spicy food kick. I ate at Di Shui Dong a couple times and was all about that place, their ribs, sea bass, and bang bang chicken... but alright this post ain't about them. Anyway, so I came by Gu Yi the other night, almost NO wait (this is at 7:30pm on a Tuesday night so that might be why) and checked out their shit. I checked the listing on City Weekend and they were saying it's cheaper than Di Shui Dong, which is wrong. But that shouldn't discourage you from going. It's not really THAT much more expensive, just their seafood dishes.

Here's all you need to know: the ribs are better than Di Shui Dong, they aren't as dry. The banana ball dessert is super fucking good but I can't seem to eat more than 2 of them after my meal and you got to dip that shit in water b/c it makes the outside crisp, it's banginnnnnnn.

So if you got the dough to spill, go here for a dinner, it's good food, and if you're afraid of it being spicy, it isn't even wait no... let me rephrase... it's BARELY spicy. Unless you're some pussy with some wack taste buds, you will not be sweating bullets eating here. Don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing.

When is Smart Shanghai going to write about the new Cantina Agave spot? Good Mexican food for okay prices. Get there before the employees figure out they're giving too much meat/fillings w/ their tacos.
