Cozy neighborhood sandwich shop and deli by notable Shanghai cook Austin Hu and his team. This is the much-anticipated replacement for his first Madison, a popular brunch and dinner spot that closed in 2014. The sandwiches are big and priced fairly at around 50-60rmb, especially considering they're smoking / curing all the meats in house. They do classics like tuna melts and pastrami sandwiches as well as more experimental joints like a "Green Eggs & Ham" made with pesto. There's also a few salads, some sweets like Rice Krispies treats, and a couple items for sale like Sriracha and truffle butter oil. The place is small -- just a few counter seats facing Huaihai Lu -- so it's mostly for takeaway. Over the next few months, they'll transition into making everything in house, from the bread to the ketchup. Depending on the day, a large-breed dog named YouYou might be lounging on the floor. She's friendly. A welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Madison Kitchen is only a 5 minute walk from my apartment (for which i am very grateful!), but even if it wasn't I would still be a regular customer here. They do the best chicken & avo sandwich i have ever tasted (that goes for the UK as well as China). It is massive, so be prepared to feel stuffed afterwards! As per previous reviews, the place is tiny so you will be lucky to get one of the few window seats but it's a bright, clean and cool environment. The staff always have a smile and the service is speedy. I highly recommend.

I've eaten my way through most of the menu, so I suppose I should review this place. In a city sorely lacking in sandwich places, Austin's deli is a very welcome addition - especially to this area of Huaihai/Urumuqi. The roast beef (Gentleman's Caller) and the meatball are my favorites - but the meatball will knock you out for an entire afternoon - it's pretty heavy.

The other sandwiches are all excellent - except the kimchi/cheese/cola ham isn't my favorite; I don't think the kimchi is flavorful enough. It's a little disappointing because Austin makes one of the best grilled cheeses I've ever had - the truffle grilled cheese. They made it at Madison and he makes it at those food festivals. Bring it back for the deli!

The sides vary from decent to really good. I'm particularly partial to the broccholini salad but everything is good. I'm not sure if they do the baking in house or outsourced, but their cookies are great! Chewy, soft and dense!

It's a tiny place and when crowded can be a fight for elbow space with only about 8 seats but the food is great.
    YUM.

The people at Madison Kitchen know what they're doing when it comes to sandwiches - granted, their menu isn't extremely big but they have masterized all of them. I wish there was something like a Michelin star system for casual sandwich joints like this.
We also had a broccolini salad and it was okay but not mind-blowing like the sandwiches. Yangmei lemonade was on point though. The place is a bit small and there's no toilet, so it's not a place to sit down for a really long time and def not a place to go pretend you're working on your laptop.
    Why I can't ever be a vegetarian.

Been here a few times over the past two weeks and love it. Had their chicken sandwich, their meatball sub, and the roast beef sandwich. All are good, but the roast beef deserves honorable mention... it's basically why you would ever come here and def. a reason as to why I will never be a vegetarian. It's a perfect sandwich, really.

The space is small and gets crowded, but the service is great and the people who work there are nice as hell. Probably best to just grab a sandwich and eat it across the street at the park.

One thing though, I wish the sandwich came with a side, like a bag of chips or a cookie... or just another sandwich, ha.
