Located WAY west on Huaihai Xi Lu, is Shanghai's newish and only Sculpture Garden. At the entrance stands a steel (fake) computer the size of a speedboat. Weirdness notwithstanding, the Sculpture Garden does offer a tiny oasis from the hubbub, replete with quiet cafes and a few shards of dried out grass.
This place is beautiful. It reminds me strongly of the 798 Galleries up in Beijing, with the same remodeled warehouse feel, and a lot of wonderful modern art sculptural pieces. The whole facility is well designed, and has some of the best typesetting out of any building I've ever seen in China. The gardens outside are a great place to relax in, and there are a number of nice coffee shops, cafes, and bars around. A wonderful discovery, and I highly recommend it. Go now before it becomes too popular and overcrowded.
The Rodin exhibition basically sucked. Be prepared for loud shmaltzy music playing in a space that's too dark to see what's being displayed. I think they turned down the lights and pumped up distracting music because the stuff on display are only miniatures, not anything that Rodin's hands actually touched. Best part of this farce is the introductory remarks posted on a wall at the entrance -- go see it just for this piece of priceless hogwash.
