      Although some carp that it's outdated and overpriced, Le Bouchon is still a mainstay among Shanghai's French contingent. The menu consists of largely traditional fare like steak tartare, escargots. Be sure to come with an empty stomach. After the original owners (who were let's say 'divisive') finally took the red-eye out of China a few years ago, it's been bought by a Hong Kong restaurateur, who's partnered with Charles Belin. Since the revamp, in our run-through of the menu, the food, though not cheap, was warming and excellent. In a simple and classic sort of way. These days, they might even let you get away with eating in there even if you don't speak French.

    Yep, I had such a horrible experience at Le Bouchon that I need to share it with you all. I hope it saves your precious money and time. Don't get me wrong, I used to like Le Bouchon. But on my fourth visit (September 2015) I spent ~RMB 1500 and got crappy bad attitude and bad food. When I complained to the waiter that the RMB 698 beef -- one of the two dishes that he had recommended as house specialty -- was overcooked, tough and dry, he literally just shrugged. For this price you can get a truly excellent steak at Roosevelt Prime, or for a bit more Le Bec or 1515. The other recommended dish, the sea bass, was totally mediocre. The foie gras compilation was the only good dish. About the setting, people who like Le Bouchon find charm in the hole-in-the-wall atmosphere, but that night we learned that mosquitoes also find it charming and our party of five spent a lot of time scratching our legs. Lastly, the owner spent the entire time behind the bar, aware and uncaring about our poor experience. Ah, some people would find this charming French culture and make jokes about how poor service is so cool and French. He even averted his eyes so as not to look at us as we left. Never coming back!
