Shanghai's second microbrewery Bund Brewery, although not really known for their home brew (dark, lager, and wheat), serves up quality gastro-fair in an area that specializes in fine upscale dining. Head on down for late night eats before or after Bund clubbing. The calimari is a great snack.
WARNING; this "restaurant" thinks food quality is up for grabs. We had a hair in our food - a black hair, none of us is darked haired. Reaction by the staff? "That happens sometimes". Well not to us no more....
I tasted the wheat beer on my friend¡¯s ¡°Bavarian party¡±. It does remind me the taste @ home. 1 week later, I went to the brewery with bunch of friend who also from Bavaria. Our stomachs were treated well by the bubbles. The food become less important when you have such nice beer. But still worth to mention the Assorted sausage plate & the kobe beef. The kobe beef is only 258 and you get a bottle of malbec if order two. Waiters are very honest to tell us the beef is actually from Australia, but I still think the quality of this beef is good valued.
We took some visitors from the US to Bund Brewery last night and have to say that like most restaurants in China, it was a near miss. Close, but no cigar. We had booked a big table and it was waiting for us when we got there. The waitstaff was quick to deliver the beer (good beer. no, great beer.) We ordered appitizers and the jalapeno poppers were better than any I'd had in Texas. The dinner was disappointing - Dark Beer Chili was more of a thin black bean soup, the Cuban pulled pork sandwich was mostly tough baguette and had nothing Cuban about it, Chirizo stuffed pork chops were dry and stuffed with ground pork, and the snapper from the fish and chips was far past its prime. This last dish was completely inetible, and as we were hungry, called the waitress to send it back and replace it with the acceptable burger. Here is where the service kind of crumbled: 5 minutes later, the chef came out with the two plates of fish and informed us that it was fresh, bought that morning. I don't know what he expected as a response, it was really not edible. The situation turned awkward until they delivered the burgers and my husband's boss finally got some dinner! To their credit, the beer kept flowing and they didn't charge us for the fish. I think I would go back to Bund Brewery, but for beers and appitizers after work. Definitely not for a meal. There are much better options in the neighborhood!
About time... good to see the brew-house concept finally getting some traction in Shanghai. Overseas, I have always enjoyed their unique atmosphere and fresh tasting, chemical-free suds. The ribs I ordered were extremely more-ish. We had a group of 10 clustered around those huge high tables the other night and it was just an excellent way to catch up with these (long lost) friends over dinner. I went the suds but others enjoyed the wine.
I don't know what's happening with the tables on the other side of the joint though, did they miss out on the renovation budget? And the sign out the front was all wrong and not switched on either... dark and wierd street scape... but you could almost reach out and touch the Pearl Tower... real Shanghai feeling. The inbound guests really dug it.
Lunch a few days later and I found the The Bund Brewery does well during the day too with Internet access and a decent coffee brew too. No more marching all the way to starbucks...
I hope that new wheat beer I heard about comes through, you need another to improve the selection. Fix the sign, keep the nice tunes and brew flowing, and you will do well with the group bookings!
JamesBoy - out.
as a newbie in town i have already gotten over drinking the local brew over and over again! tsing tao was a novelty in australia, but here it is cheaper to buy than water haha. I was told of the Bund Brewery by a mate on campus who said that they brewed their own beer on sight. I headed down and tried their beer and have to say that while more expensive than your average tsing tao, it was worth it! great appertizers as well. Will be making this place a starting point for future nights out on the town!
1 liter beer at the Oktoberfest in Munich = 73rmb. 1 liter beer at Bund Brewery = 88rmb. Something wrong here huh ? Anyway, food is good and prices for the food are fair.
BUMMER . . . We had been eagerly anticipating our Bund Brewery experience. Sadly, our dreams were dashed when the food / price ratio revealed itself. The Dawn Larger Chili could be aptly described as 55 RMB canned bean soup. The Grilled Flat Bread Parma Pizza was a greasy combination of canned artichoke and thickly cut parma ham.
In all fairness, we did not have the much talked about beer. There is hope yet for Bund Brewery, but we recommend you come with a full stomach.
Bund brewery is a nice addition to the Bund with it's no nonsense food, kinda reminds me of the bar/bistros back home. If you;re looking a for a decent feed before emptying your pockets elsewhere on the bund, this Bar offers a good value meal. The beer ain't half bad either
Yes, the beer is actually good! They are calling it bundlander on the posters, but the staff doesn't really know that name - hah... So order a lager instead :P The food and service is good. We had no issues here. Arguing over price is not something you need to do when you are in that part of town, so I wont either.
What I like best is the simple and straight forwardness of this place. Clean, open, central bar. Great place to kick of an evening, or go there to close it.
The Bund Brewery is the newest spot on the Bund. If you are interested in getting dinner there, I would suggest you limit your interaction with this place to a drink (if that). The food is not only over priced, but it's quality is sub par at best. The service isn¡¯t mind blowingly bad, but I would appreciate it if my appetizer didn¡¯t come to the table 30 minutes after my entree. To say one thing good about this place- the beer on draught is great, slightly overpriced, but expected for the bund. The bottom line is, there are plenty of places to go for dinner on the bund, a even a few with seat backs, good service and tasty, on time food.
