Got invited there last friday and will avoid going back there given the nasty service we got. Disappointing since I was really looking forward to a good friday night after a stressful week at work...
The food at this restaurant is really quite bad. And so is the service. I was with a large group who EACH spent over 250 RMB, and the entire experience was a disappointment. The drinks were watery and uninspired, the food was oily and repetitive and the decor was flat. I recommend Indalo, instead.
I was thoroughly unimpressed.I had read the reviews and was looking forward to it, too. The winelist was unbalanced (totally skewed towards $$$) and the food was mediocre at best.
My hat off to Zoco operators !!! beautifull place and excellent value for money....the restaurant clearly shows its teething problems though.....however i trust that operators of the caliber of Casanova and Velvet Lounge will get everything right pretty soon.
I was in the same business years ago and i know how difficult is to get everything right in one single shot !(Impossible). Casa 13 and Otto also very good places....and if you want to have a decent drink in a cosy and friendly place go to Velvet which is also prostitutes free !!!!!!!!!!!
I was invited in the fresh newly-open Zoco by a common friends and I was impressed by the atmosphere.
It is quite relaxing and cool. The lights are not bright leading to a perfect combination of eye and mind. It's such a good place were to spend a quiet and friendly dinner.
The restaurant is supposed to be a Tapa's bar, but the main courses are more attractive. All fish dishes are well served and cooked. The grilled seafood served with a tasty bisque is delicious.
I have to say that I was not impressed by the Tapas.
Little boring on the selection and too many deep fried ones. Actually the tapas are very good and tasty, but I would have expected more spanish fantasy either on the cooking style or on the ingredients. What about different kinds of tortillas, jambon serrano and paella ...? sounds interesting?
The desserts are quite a surprise. They are well studied in terms of taste combination and even too ambitious for a Tapa's bar. The crema catalana is far from the standard one, it is served in Martini glass, it doesn't have the typical egg-yolk flavour and it comes with a little coconut ice cream ball in it.
Try the cheesecake as well...creamy and tasty served in a ball...
The service is impeccable. The staff is professional and they look after you as in a 5-stars hotel.
Overall Zoco is a nice surprise, it has just started with many good steps and some improvements opportunity to come. My first time in Zoco, I got the chance to meet one of the restaurant owner and he proactively responsed to my comments. This place is likely going to be a very-cool-place-to-go enjoying a different ambient and food. Check it out.... actually shanghai is this ...
Another over hyped restaurant arrives in Shanghai. Uncomfortably low banquettes, resulting in the tables being too high, and no back support. Poor lighting, even the candles weren’t enough to read the menu by, the music was fine, but too loud, background music is supposed be just that, background music.
As to the food, stale toasted French baguette plonked on the table, no offer of olive oil or balsamic vinegar had to ask to these. Good job the chef had a deep fat fryer, (was his last position at McDonalds in Barcelona?) everything appeared to be fried in the same tasteless oil.
The cod fish or the deep-fried fish ball, with absolutely no fish but an empty batter shell, along with the deep-fried ham ball, of course no ham but six mini potato balls with a glass of foamed yoghurt, very fluffy and very sour. Felt as if I was dipping by balls in a bubble bath poured with vinegar, while being waited upon by a flock of multinational but monolingual staff who only knew the menu in Spanish, very pretentious.
With the menu and beverage prices one could at least expect proper cloth napkins, rather than a paper drink napkin, and as to the Sangria a very weak concoction.
Overall a very poor experience indeed, not worth the effort to track down the establishment in the first place, congratulations you made it to number one on our worst dinning experience this year…
Finally a real Tapas restaurant in Shanghai. Being Spanish I'm quite picky when it comes to Tapas. The chef is aparently from Barcelona and he does his own twist on some of the classics but also makes modern style tapas that i've never had before. The tortilla with chorizo was awesome as well as the croquettes and the polenta pizza. Huge tapas selection and good jamon and chorizo. Also not to be missed are the deserts, the best I've had in SH! Now over to the best part: prices VERY reasonable. A group of us had loads of tapas and sangria and ended up paying around 200/person.
Nice design too with good ambience.
On the downside, the place is a little bit hard to find, hidden inside a residential compound on Julu Lu.
