Editor's Description
Last updated: August 28, 2013

Stalwart of the underground dance music scene, The Shelter provides a forum for both locally-based independent electronic artists and DJs, and new international alternative dance acts. A converted bomb shelter, the club is dark, sweaty, black, loud, and thumping. Virtually every single Shanghai independent promoter has a weekly or monthly party therein, and so music ranges on a given night from Reggae to IDM to Drum n Bass to Electro to Hip Hop. Drinks are cheap (for real cheap) and cover ranges from 10rmb to 50rmb depending on whose playing.

Portuguese label Labareda is dropping a comp of experimental electronic music by producers based in China. Pretty diverse lineup, ranging from house to noise, with Torturing Nurse, thruoutin, Zebre-Rouge, Floood, DJ Doggy, and American Booze. Cover is 50rmb, including a free copy of the CD. Take a listen on Bandcamp for a taste. Starts at 10pm and goes late.
On Fri 03 at The Shelter

Sub-Culture continues a string of bookings from the mighty Hyperdub label with Ikonika in this bomb shelter club. Should be really good. Her productions blend Latin Freestyle, Boogie, and Techno into a really original, next-level sound. Check out her tune "Mr. Cake" and her remix for CHVRCHES for a taste. She's also a solid DJ. Cover is 60rmb. Big bonus, one of Sub-Culture's founding members Blaise Deville is back for this night as well.
On Sat 04 at The Shelter

Big, big night for bass music as Sweatshop bring in the talented Om Unit. His style spans multiple genres, but all the tunes retain one element -- bass for your face. He's also a fine DJ. If you dig Machinedrum or juke music, you'll like this. Support from Sayer, Arkaik, Siesta, Monk, Resinate, and Roo. Cover is 60rmb or free if you download this app called Skyscanner. Starts at 10pm and goes late.
On Fri 10 at The Shelter

Chinese music website brings in Japanese DJ Nobu, who runs a club night and label called Terror Sound in his hometown Chiba. Expect abstract techno and dancefloor bangers. Support from Jackie, sleepless, Microlab, and Ginga. Starts at 10pm and goes late. Cover is 60rmb.
On Fri 17 at The Shelter
