Editor's Description
Last updated: August 28, 2013

Stalwart of the underground dance music scene, The Shelter provides a forum for both locally-based independent electronic artists and DJs, and new international alternative dance acts. A converted bomb shelter, the club is dark, sweaty, black, loud, and thumping. Virtually every single Shanghai independent promoter has a weekly or monthly party therein, and so music ranges on a given night from Reggae to IDM to Drum n Bass to Electro to Hip Hop. Drinks are cheap (for real cheap) and cover ranges from 10rmb to 50rmb depending on whose playing.

Up
coming

A bunch of solid Shanghai producers and DJs rendezvouing at The Shelter on a public holiday night. Music by El'se, TzuSing, Mia, Conrank, Jado, Gooooose, Drunk Monk, and Ado8. Free entry. Starts at 10pm and goes late.
On Thu 02 at The Shelter

Berlin Love Service aka Chris Jobs returns with VOID, Shanghai's crew for underground techno and house. He's got a full suitcase of vinyl fresh from his hometown - Berlin. Chris, also a schnitzel connoisseur and authority on bratwurst, is a fine selector, so this should be good. Here's one of his recent sets. Cover is 30rmb. Starts at 10pm and goes till 5am. Support from Shanghai Ultra and Ginzburg.
On Sat 04 at The Shelter

Sub-Culture brings in Japanese experimental producer Yosi Horikawa for a live set of productions made with field recordings and home-made instruments. Hear some of that right here on his Soundcloud. He's also a veteran of Red Bull Music Academy, whose documentary Layered Memories: Searching For Sound with Yosi Horikawa will be shown sometime before the event. Cover is 60rmb, including a free RBMA welcome drink for the first 100 people. Support by Faded Ghost, Drunk Monk, and guests.
On Sat 11 at The Shelter

Just after a packed show with Nguzunguzu, Wooozy Offline continue their string of solid bookings with London's Untold. He's the head of the Hemlock label, which was the first to put out an EP by James Blake, plus killer trax by Pearson Sound and many more. Support by Wooozy Offline residents Bobby Sleepless, Jackie, Doggy, plus special guest Tzu Sing who just released an EP on the L.I.E.S. label. Cover is 60rmb. Starts at 10pm and goes late.
On Sat 18 at The Shelter

Ultra hip NYC MC/DJ duo MeLo-X and Jasmine Solano drop their hazy strain of R&B, hip hop, reggae, and electronic music at this staple basement club. They've been running a popular club night called Electric Punanny in New York, with guests like Murs, Kid Cudi, and more. They've done mixes with Machinedrum, been remixed by artists like PARTYNEXTDOOR and Sango, and supported people like Talib Kweli and Wiz Khalifa. Their Soundcloud sounds pretty good. This is the only Chinese date on their door. Support by V-Nutz and guests. Cover is 80rmb including a drink.
On Fri 24 at The Shelter

The new party [sic] Transit returns to this bomb shelter with two guests, Black Merlin and Soundspade, dropping electronica, house and techno. Check out Black Merlin's Boiler Room set here for a taste. Support by Will A., Tom Hughes, Shanyinde, and Loke. Cover is 50rmb. Starts at 10pm and goes late.
On Sat 25 at The Shelter

On
going

Weekly hip hop night that's been running for three years down in an old bomb shelter on Yongfu Lu. Free entry, open mic. Frequented by local hip hop DJs, dancers, and MCs. Residents are T-Plus and DJ Caution and guests often show up and drop sets. Usually gets busy around midnight. Music policy = mostly old school and underground, no new top 40 hip hop. Starts at 10pm, goes late. No cover. Good vibes and consistently fun.
Every Wed at The Shelter
