Stalwart of the underground dance music scene, The Shelter provides a forum for both locally-based independent electronic artists and DJs, and new international alternative dance acts. A converted bomb shelter, the club is dark, sweaty, black, loud, and thumping. Virtually every single Shanghai independent promoter has a weekly or monthly party therein, and so music ranges on a given night from Reggae to IDM to Drum n Bass to Electro to Hip Hop. Drinks are cheap (for real cheap) and cover ranges from 10rmb to 50rmb depending on whose playing.

The one night of the year you can take the whole family down to The Shelter. Awesome Kids Club are turning the bomb shelter club into a haunted dungeon, with tunnels, haunted houses, enchanted potions, and more. Family ticket is 300rmb for up to four people (one adult minimum) and 100rmb for each additional person. Two sessions, one from 4-6pm (4-7 years old) and another from 7-9 pm (7-12 years old). Children must be accompanied by a parent or a responsible adult caregiver.
On Fri 31 at The Shelter

The Shelter continues their tradition of being ironic or not giving a fuck or whatever on Halloween. Solid lineup of DJs, with V-Nutz, TzuSing, Aivilox, Downstate, and Drunk Monk. Cover is 40rmb, because someone's gotta pay for this flyer design. Starts at 10pm and goes late.
On Fri 31 at The Shelter

The messy weekly hip hop party Come Correct turns three years old. That's three years of boom bap, tequila shots, bad decisions, and basement funk. Bunch of degenerate DJs coming through the drop sets at this jam. Expect old school hip hop, breakdance jams, disco, 80s electro, party breaks, and more. Just don't expect new hip hop hits. Starts at 10pm and goes until 5am. Cover is 40rmb.
On Sat 01 at The Shelter

Another big booking by Sub-Culture, with Brooklyn-based bass-music and dancehall producer Dubbel Dutch from the Mix Pak and Lit City Trax labels. He's produced for Popcaan and other big names. Support looks good too, including a live ambient set by Hashback Hashish, and DJ sets from Nargiz, Yeti B, Downstate, and Drunk Monk, plus visuals and an installation by Kim Laughton. Cover is 60rmb. Starts at 10pm and goes late.
On Sat 08 at The Shelter

Tzu Sing from Stockholm Syndrome, Shanghai's dedicated night to Industrial, Dark Techno, and EBM, releases the first of three EPs on the much-hyped L.I.E.S. label from New York. Support by Howell starting the night with some Giallo and horror soundtracks, VOID's Nat Alexander dropping some off kilter house and techno, and Stockholm Syndrome resident Illsee. Cover is 40rmb.
On Fri 14 at The Shelter

Underground techno and house from the VOID crew doing another one, this time with South Russian resident Ginzburg dropping some of that cyber-bear electrofunk wizardry. Paws in the air. Support from Shanghai Ultra, Chris Jobs, and Wensen. Starts at 10pm and goes late. Cover is 30rmb.
On Sat 15 at The Shelter

Old-school Parisian DJ Ivan Smagghe takes over the decks at this bomb shelter club for a night. If you're into DFA, Optimo, or Andrew Weatherall, you'll probably dig this. Support by Tzu Sing, Allan Marshall, Stanley, and Thoma Cher. Cover is 70rmb; starts at 10pm and goes late.
On Fri 21 at The Shelter
Fresh off shows with Untold, Bok Bok, and Nguzunguzu, Wooozy Offline brings in another big bass act. This time it's London-based grime producer Mumdance, who's making some seriously next-level jams. Support by Alta, Naaah, and Wooozy Offline residents. Cover is 20rmb for the first 20 people, then 40rmb for everyone after.
On Thu 27 at The Shelter

Weekly hip hop night that's been running for three years down in an old bomb shelter on Yongfu Lu. Free entry, open mic. Frequented by local hip hop DJs, dancers, and MCs. Residents are T-Plus and DJ Caution and guests often show up and drop sets. Usually gets busy around midnight. Music policy = mostly old school and underground, no new top 40 hip hop. Starts at 10pm, goes late. No cover. Good vibes and consistently fun.
Every Wed at The Shelter
