This cafe/restaurant/wine bar serves light American fare such as sauteed fish and pasta dishes. Upstairs the ambiance is cozy, with an inviting fireplace as the centerpiece and soft couches to lounge on if you're there for a beverage.

This is a great brunch place if there are a few people requiring different tastes.
The food is sufficient but stick with the menu and try not to order outside of.
Their caprese salad is a little strange and they seem to do takes on the classics..some items are good and some are quite different.
It feels clean, downstairs has a good coffee bar and you can chill. Upstairs is good for meeting up with friends. Comfy. easy going atmosphere.
Have been back a few times with different friends - its just not really a regular type of haunt. Just a place that you feel is sufficient.

Having just gotten back from a month-long sabbatical in the states, I have been religiously sticking to a salad-smoothie-sandwich diet in order to ease my gastrointestinal system back into China food standards. What a relief it was to find Amokka! Not only was their food fresh and reminiscent of the cafes I frequented in California, but it was reasonably priced as well! I first came here on a Thursday evening and ordered their Caesar salad with Chicken (~50), two glasses of pinot (30-40/glass) and shared their antipasto platter (98 for two). My friend had their fish burger (~60) which came with a side of thick fries. Both being California girls, we couldn't stop raving about what a sigh of relief this restaurant was for us. The food was brought out promptly as well as our drinks. As the seating for this restaurant is primarily upstairs, it was bit of a chore to wave down a waiter despite it being relatively empty. The upstairs seating was a bit hot but the waiters turned on the AC after another patron requested. Overall, our first experience was great and we were already scheduling a second dinner to bring our friends here.
Friday night, I arrive at 9 for a late dinner (Amokka stays open conveniently late). We were seated at a larger table for a party of six and the restaurant is at 75-80% capacity. We order two serves of the antipasto to share, chicken wings, and a smattering of mains (which my friends all found relatively good/decent tasting). I was down with a cold and didn't have much of an appetite so just ordered a smoothie and snacked on the antipasto. From the beginning of our dinner (at 9pm) I requested 6 glasses of waters. From then on, every time something was brought to our table I would, again, request 6 glasses of water. Even after they had brought us our drinks (we all ordered separate drinks as well) the water was still not brought. After we had all finished our food, I again requested 6 glasses of water. Every time water was requested the waiters would say "ma shang lai" (I'll bring it right away). The combination of the smoking (you're allowed to smoke at this venue) along with my cold, I was just about dying for something cool to quell the itching sensation in my throat. At this point, my friend could not stand the lack of service and grabbed a jug of water for me. After a halting a waiter and asking as to why they hadn't given us waters after 2 hours of asking, she hastily grabbed a jug and filled some cups and slammed the jug back down. The lack of service and the waitress' bad attitude left negative impression and we left soon after. As we were closing the bill, I went downstairs to use the bathroom and it was then that I realized a factor for the abysmal service -- the waiters were all congregated in the downstairs bar conversing and just... hanging out with each other rather than attending to the diners upstairs!
Although Amokka would be a great place to spend a lazy afternoon (especially if you do not want to be bothered at all) I would really like to see the service improved as this is a great space to eat with good food. Unfortunately I will probably not be back until I hear something has been done about the service.

Nice atmosphere. Service is hit or miss... decent coffee, though. Will be back.
