Shanghai definitely needs another no-frills Thai spot and hopefully Qing Mai will take on this role. This nook of a restaurant has four family-style round tables and its quaint decor fits in perfectly with the nuanced boulevard that Jinxian Lu has become.
I went there once last year and thought every single dish was meh.
I was back yesterday when friends said "let's eat thai" and I didn't pay attention to the address. I had to be dragged in kicking and screaming when I realized where we were.
Thinking it would be a safe bet, I ordered a coconut soup with chicken. Probably the most common Thai dish. I've eaten this hundreds of times in Thailand and abroad. This was the first time I got it sour instead of sweet. The chicken was extremely rubbery. Basically it was inedible, and I didn't eat it. I just ate some vegetables. I asked the owner if she thought this was how a thai coconut soup with chicken was supposed to taste, but she didn't even know the term for it (in Thai, "Tom kha gai"). I suspect she has never set foot in Thailand.
Basically this place is owned by a Chinese lady who doesn't speak Thai. She has a disinterested Thai cook (or maybe Chinese?) in the small kitchen whipping up terrible dishes in 2 mins (that's the one good thing, it is FAST). The decor is, well, there is no decor, and the place is the size of my bed. Yet it's not cheap. Good deal for the owner I guess.
