Cha is a faithful recreation of a Hong Kong cha canting -- basically a Cantonese diner -- from the 1950's, right down to the old-time music, the old-time Hong Kong public lavatory signs, and the green-and-white tiled floor. Food is similarly traditional.

Well, i have heard a lot of good things about this restaurant. My wife and i stopped in a few days ago. the atomsphere was like that of an old HK style dinner. Business was good, customers excited about a good meal.
We ordered the sweet n sour pork, shrimp fried rice, beef brisket curry, Roasted chicken wings and pineapple bread. Everything was just like it should be. well done.

I love this place! Everything from the food, the quick service, to the authentic decor is amazing (and cheap)! Sure, you have to wait at times, but it really does hit the spot when you're going for a late night dinner. I just hope they keep it up the standard or maybe open one closer to home.

You can't get more of Hongkong than when you are in Cha's restaurant. I went in at around 830pm, but the place was full and bustling with diners enjoying the Hongkong fare. Cha's restaurant is the quintessential Hongkong eaterie, that when you enter the restaurant, it really feels like you've stepped into Hongkong itself. The ambience is great, if you're enthusiastic for the Hongkong-style atmosphere. The menu is simple and consists of all the typical fare you're likely to find in Hongkong.
While at Cha's, you have to try the Fujian rice or the egg and shrimp rice. It is amazing, especially at the value for money prices! I ordered a vegetable dish and tofu as well, which were pretty good as well. The best part about Cha's is the location, not only is it right by Huaihai lu, its at Sinan lu and the street is beautiful and serene, worth taking a walk along. And next door, there are plenty of night venues to stop by after dinner at Cha's.

Just a street off Huai Hai Middle Road, me and my friends headed to this restaurant after a day of shopping on Huai Hai Road.
A restaurant that heard quite a lot about from my friends and colleagues. The decor is simple and nice, but the queue during peak hours is ridiculously long. Service is also quite bad. A bit disappointed..
Food wise, not bad, just that a lot of them are too salty. Be reminded to request for less oil, less salt and no MSG.
Nice place for a quick dinner with friends..

The service here is pretty good. Although it took a bit of time for some of the food to come out. Some of the people in my party had finished eating before others had even gotten theirs.
The pasta is good, and so is the ribs in black bean sauce w/ noodles (28rmb?). I ordered the house curry w/ beef brisket (32rmb) and it was some of the best curry I've had in Shanghai. Nice coconut taste to it.
The portions are fair, and the prices are okay. I'd eat here over Tsui Wai or Xin Wan anyday.

Cha has resurrected traditional hongkong-style dining and it seems that most locals are loving it ! The place was packed during dinner. It was very lively and this greatly enhanced food enjoyment. In a stark contrast to its retro dining space, the menu is displayed on a plasma tv screen. I personally thought it was rather extravagant to support it!
The food reminded me of home-cooked fare; definitely simplicity at its best. :) It was also incredible for the staff to be able to continuously refill our cups when the eatery was crowded.

If you want to understand the Hong Kong style of eating (high quality, fast, can have repeatedly everyday as lunch, breakfast, diner), here is a place for an ethnographic study. Though bringing us back to 1960/70's and dining in a Run Run Shaw's Studio, the dishes are modernized by removing all the excessive oil in the old style Chinese cooking. The unique "thick" and "smooth" authentic Iced Milk Tea -- a secret formula mixing different kinds of tea leaves -- is something you should not miss. You cannot find expensive shark-fins here because this type of restaurants are places to meet friends rather than to celebrate your birthday or marriage anniversary (unless you BYO candle and have to ask the manager to dim the light). The menu reflects the distillate of dishes that Hong Kong Chinese like and are relatively quick to prepare (but skill-demanding to cook, if your are as demanding as some of the locals).

They've done a good job with the decor - definitely resembles an old hong kong cha chaan teng. top marks in terms of attention to detail. early signs are very encouraging.
haven't had the chance to eat there yet so can't comment on that but drinks aren't bad. the iced milk tea is very soothing in this current weather! if you don't have a sweet tooth, may well ask the staff to put less sugar in the milk tea. staff are attentive but a little too enthusiastic. the owner is usually on hand happy to answer any questions and chat which is comforting to know. good to see the boss putting in the effort, genuinely cares and listens to the customers!
lots of options on the menu and prices seem reasonable. portions are decent too. half the menu is available at tsui wah too but cha's is definitely cheaper and food is alot more original. i also find tsui wah too sterile and soulless.

Been travelling around Hong kong for a while and have not seen some nice retro restaurant deco like this. But food is the major thing about dining, damage is really minimal compared with other cantonese food. We had the ice tea with lime and lemon and singaporean fried rice noodle. No oil on the dish after we finished which is quite rare in this part of China. The deseert egg tart is nice although it did not look great. Really can't think of others comment for the price....
