Paulaner is the most successful German restaurant chain in Shanghai and boasts three grandiose outlets on both sides of the Huangpu, including one in Xintiandi (although that one's mainly for tourists). All your standard German dishes are available herein –- schnitzels, sausage platters, et. al. -- as well as Paulaner's own brand of beer, which comes in wheat and lager. Paulaner is known for said beer and it's even available in selected convenience stores around town. A good venue for larger groups, Paulaner turns into a good old fashion beer fest on the weekends with much drunken revelry and horrible dancing -- especially the one in Xintiandi, which hosts Filipino cover bands.
=The outlets on Fenyang Lu and Pudong offer great outdoor seating, and the more standard German beer garden experience (patio seating at the Xintiandi outlet is pretty negligible). Like all German restaurants, a meal at Paulaner isn't cheap, but if you're looking for dependable German food, good beer, and a good tipsy time, this Brauhaus is a safe bet.

We ordered 2 Paulaner Wheet beers and some food. When the beers came, we called the waiter again, as they tasted very very different from a normal german wheet beer and were definitely not PAULANER wheet beer. We actually thought there is something wrong with the Keg or the system and recommended changing it. However, we were ensured that there is nothing wrong with the beer and this is the original taste, verified by the german brewmaster. As this wheetbeer was definitly of absolutely unacceptable quality, we asked for another type of beer and were given 2 small glassed of the 2 remaining alternatives, and as we didn't want to be impolite, we went for one option each. Unfortunately those 2 alternatives also didn't have to do anything with bavarian or german beer and we also didn't feel like finishing them during our 1 hour stay...
In addition the food was of rather unimpressive quality, too. The quality and dryness of the vienna Schnitzel and even the Fries was comparable with what you would get at a lowpriced fast food outlet.
Overall the hour we spent at the Paulaner was rather disappointing. I can't see the point of paying 75 rmb for strange tasting beer (.0.5l) brewed on site, if very reasonably priced chinese beer like Qingdao is widely availbe throughout the city and seem to share more with german taste, than what we were offered at the Paulaner.
