While several other Indian restaurants around town can claim to make better food, Punjabi has cornered the market on price. With several lunch and dinner set options available, as well as a tasty 99rmb all-you-can-eat-and-drink (beer) buffet, Punjabi is a sure winner for anyone on a budget. The restaurant's interior matches the food's authenticity, as does the band that occasionally entertains with sounds from the sub-continent.

Probably the worst Indian food I have ever had in my life. The buffet is not worth it at all. For 99 rmb you can eat a lot better anywhere else.
I love Indian food and if you do too, give this place a miss.
I wish I had read some of thr reviews before going.

I am not a foodie. I set the bar incredibly low in hopes that others manage not to trip over it while they go about their business. Unfortunately Punjabi appears to be woefully incapable of providing even a subpar product. The food was rediculously plain. Every single dish tasted the same, yet they made 20 of them? I am unsure whether they even used currey...the same green pepper did appear in every dish, but not a distinctly Indian taste? Honestly a laughable attempt. Definately not worth 50 RMB, let alone the 99 RMB they actually charge. That said the rice, nan, and tiger beer were all wonderful. They should change the buffet to all you can eat rice, beer, and nan...at least we would know what we were getting.

I am a veteran of the old Punjabi back on XiangYang lu. Back in the days when the crazy guy with the mustache and the stick used to do an amazing dance routine on stage and pull a pretty blonde laowai up to dance with him when he could. Back then the food wasn't so much the attraction as the free flowing beer and a place to drink it with free snacks was. Those were the days of youthful belligerence and apathy.
That being said, my recent trip (a matter of years later) to the new Punjabi on Huaihai appeared to be a lot more grown-up. I can't comment on the authenticity of the food, as I have never been to northern India. However, there seemed to be a significant jump in variety and quality since my last hazy experience on Xiangyang. The service was more prompt as well, with beer and soft drinks arriving unprompted, and dirty plates disapearing with relative expediency. The decor was a lot more modern, and the location more cosmopolitan, while still maintaining a great value. Overall, I think this former beer hole has blossomed into a genuine entertaining option for groups of grown-ups. I for one will be back again, sans the long hair and dirty band t-shirt.

Very good authentic Indian food at reasonable price (compared to Shanghai). Their dinner buffet is good, vegetarian and non-veg, with unlimited beer or coke. The buffet menu changes from day to day and it can surprise you. Don't forget to have the sweets after your dinner is over. One afternoon I was nearby for a meeting and had their Veg set. Good black dal and two subji, very good. Definitely a must if you want to taste North Indian restaurant food.
