Japanese restaurant Meshi has moved shop from crowded Taikang Lu to the recently opened boutique development Jiashan Market. Meshi is an odd mix of concepts under one roof: "Modern Japanese Cuisine" meets "flower show" and a "Japanese Tea Salon". The decor is mod loft-style.

My wife always asks me, when I suggest a new place, where I heard about it. A good question to ask as it turns out. We tried this place simply b/c we were standing outside, hungry and trying to decide where to eat when my four year old son, attracted to the kitsch, went inside. The stuff is interesting, so by all means, shop there. But, we cannot recommend the service or the food. We had some udon noodles that were tasteless, a sushi roll that was tastebad and I am not even sure what else since I stopped eating after the sushi. Fortunately, the farmers market was on so after settling the bill, we stepped outside for some desserts that were very tasty and yummy.
