I was really looking forward for some quality sushi and left the Abuse very dissapointed. I ordered the Sushi Combo and was told it was Chefs selection which tend to mean that whatever fresh produce of that day is served on your plate. Instead, the very modest plate contained cucumber maki, california rolls and extremely thin slices of mediocre species. I could see the rice ball underneath my tuna nigiri and the fish was too thin to really taste anything. I know this is China and good produce is hard to come by, but for the prize i paid for this combo i rather spend some more quais and head towards the hign end sushi restaurants. However in all fairness, my friends who had suykiyaki and hot pots left satisfied and the decor is nice.

The idea of sushi abuse is great, the restaurant is a bit cold for me and the service is not really worth the money you spend, although they try. forgotten orders, missed reservations and kicked us out because of closing times at 10:00, without telling us when we reserved with friends for a 9pm dinner. Just ordered sherpa's and I had to ask twice if this was really what I ordered. 174 RMB sashimi really is a one-man's 4 o'clock snack when on a diet, not a dinner for two! disappointed and hungry. Luckily the bottle of champagne and great company made up for it... :-)

I really liked this restaurant. seems like they figured out the service issue that others had problems with. we had 2 servers constantly bussing our table, both of them spoke english and made popular menu recommendations, which were completely spot on. the codfish was amazing. like melt in your mouth awesomeness. and the sashimi is the best that ive had at this price range. yeah the other sushi has a lot of rice, so just stick with the sashimi. good stuff. yellowtail, sea urchin, mini lobster, salmon, all of it was good. and the steamed spinach in butter sauce. wow. just wow.
the decor is really cool too. a lot of bamboo and other sustainable materials. you can tell that the owners really went to some effort to design the place. we sat on the first floor and i thought the venue was quite small, but upstairs is ginormous. so definitely would like to come back some time with a large group of people.
im also really impressed with the restaurant's owners who are committed to improving the shanghai community. i know they partner with charity groups in town and although that doesnt affect food quality, it's nice to know that the owners are good people. would definitely come back.

I am a huge sushi fan and since I had heard a few good reviews from friends and colleagues I decided to give this restaurant a try. First to arrive I walked into the restaurant and the staff just stared at me waiting for me to explain why I was there. After sharing with them the name of the reservations I was placed in between 2 other tables that were so close it was impossible to have any privacy. So I then requested to sit at the sushi counter as they explained the only other option was the long table upstairs. At the sushi counter I was entertained by the sushi chefs adjusting their hair and flirting with the female staff through the kitchen window, ignoring the orders that awaited them. Annoyed by this I moved for the third time to their upstairs dining area and was seated at the long table. The bench which I later realised when I moved to the fourth and final seating was littered with tempura batter. My final table at the restaurant was at one of the upstairs tatami tables which is the best seating option available in the restaurant. The other guests finally arrive and lucky for them they had missed the game of musical chairs. We ordered a variety of food to try as a starter only because we all had similar so-so first impressions. We ordered the abuse salad which was ok, a variety of sashimi, also ok but we were disappointed that they did not have toro, and sushi or what was supposed to be sushi. The rice for the sushi and nigiri was over cooked and so sticky it was hard to swallow. Also the rolls barely had enough filling, the 2 end pieces were just 2 sticky globs of rice. The ingredients seemed good and fresh but what's sushi without the rice??? Instead of ordering anything else from the menu we decided to fill our appetites somewhere else. After paying the bill we grabbed our shoes from the shelf below the tatami seats only to discover that all our shoes were filthy from the dust bunnies hiding below. Let's just say - we won't be coming back!

This is definately an upgrade to the previous Japanese restaurant that used to be in its place in terms of interiors.
Decor feels very spacious and new but is a little cold and bland, supposingly trendy.
Sustainable point of view is questionable but at least they are doing their part to represent.
The 248 deal is really not a deal - you can go to Donghu lu and get an amazing deal for less.... from any of the all you can eat places along their for under 200.
The rice was really sticky and or overcooked .. this has happened a few times. So not sure what is going on here. But am starting to wonder how the rolls can be made with sticky rice or if it is their personality for the rolls.
The name Sushi Abuse actually puts me off going back again. I love sushi.... and this place just doesn't do justice to some amazing sushi that's out there. In fact it left me with a negative impression about the food.
I wonder how long this joint will last.

I went a few weeks ago with my boyfriend since its really close to where we live, so we wanted to check it out. We ordered a Nigiri sushi combo, avocado sushi roll and a teriyaki chicken don. The teriyaki chicken don was pretty average with no garnishes or any sort of decor to present the dish apart form the bowl itself, it didn't look very appetizing...The avocado sushi roll was okay apart from the really sticky rice they used, it almost tasted like 'sticky rice' sushi... The Nigiri sushi combo wasn't the freshest...most of the seafood on the sushi were a little more fishy than usual(+ that sticky rice), but the nigiri sushi with salmon roe was so fishy that I could not swallow it...
The service was okay in general, and average decor.

The location of this new sushi restaurant is close to my house and replaces another sushi restaurant (Shoka) I used to eat at all the time. Shoka was a regular haunt because of its convenience for me, but Sushi Abuse is going to be a regular eating place because it's not only really close, but also really good.
I have now been a couple of times for dinner with friends and have tried the infinity menu for RMB 248 (including all you can eat, beer, plum wine and sake) as well as ordering a la carte. Unless you are gearing up for a major feast / drinking session, a la carte is probably the best value. Six of us ate and drank more than our fill for RMB 200 per person.
The food is great. Really fresh sashimi, a range of maki rolls (some admittedly better than others -- I'm not really a fan of mango-related sushi dishes) and some real hits among the hot dishes, particularly the buttery beef and the cod, which we will definitely be ordering again.
Although a little slow, the service wasn't bad for a newly-opened place in Shanghai. At one point when there was a mistake made with one of our drinks, it was handled really well and the next time we ordered the same thing, it came out perfectly. So it seems as though the staff are still learning the ropes a little, but are trying hard to please. I have always been of the opinion that some service mistakes are okay as long as people are trying their best and have a good attitude towards the customer (that's hard enough to find in Shanghai), so overall I thought it didn't put a dampener on our experience.
One of my favorite aspects of this place is the decor, which has been improved 100 percent since the Shoka days. The industrial-chic exposed concrete and the restaurant-length central table are both highlights. I'm not sure whether you could really call Sushi Abuse a romantic place, but the atmosphere could be really suitable for a fun and casual first date. I can say that it is a great choice for a fun night out with friends.

I have been to Sushi Abuse a couple of times - mostly with friends and really like the place. sustainable is an important issue and I have stopped eating sushi for that reason - and now I can have it again. GREAT! I also like the deco as its simple, clean and modern and I guess the huge table upstairs would be a great place for a company dinner or birthday party.
I have never tried the all-you-can-eat but have always ordered a-la-carte and never payed more than 400 for 2 so maybe thats the better deal. the quality of the fish is superb and some of the makis very nice.
service is not bad for a place that has just opened and they do their best - defintely customer oriented!

As far as they are going with the "sustainable sushi" twist, I believe Sushi Abuse will do a very good job! At this rate, it doesn't seem like they will be around long enough to put a dent on the already declining salmon population. Too bad it isn't much of a place for food, atmosphere, and definitely not service. Though it looks much better than it used to (when it was that other sushi joint (forgot its' name already), the feeling inside is very bleak and lacks warmth.
The food isn't anything spectacular, and just like most other places in the city, charges too much for a meal that will not fill you up. Expect a little higher quality of fish than that of baobao and lower quality than Shintori or Haiku. I think they were trying to create rolls of the medium price range, but have not done a very good job. Just hit up the mini bar at Sushi'O - so much better than this place & they have wifi! It looks like they had fun naming the rolls in the office (ex: you maki me hot), but didn't spend enough time creating them in the kitchen - and definitely not enough time training the staff on how to say the name of the rolls. The dishes kept coming to the table unannounced and we were left sitting starring at the dish for a good 5 minutes before we could flag down some service, then another 5 for them to run off to get someone to tell us what dish it was and who it belonged to.
A big issue was the timing the food orders came out. A friend of mine waited more than 30 minutes to eat her sushi roll because other people's orders took SO long to arrive. I don't want to play the waiting game when it comes to dinner, do you? You may as well go next door to the 7-11 and get a decent meal - it'll fill you up for a tenth of the costs.
Poor service, you don't get value for your money
Their all you can eat deal is ridiculous. If they think the price is reasonable for the stuff they're making out of the kitchen?! Your money will be MUCH better spent splurging at a hotel brunch with free-flow champagne. Save it for that! Especially at the speed of which the food comes out, you won't want to waste your money on 3 mediocre sushi rolls... if you even get them.
Sushi Abuse, I appreciate your effort to save the environment 1 fish at a time, but until you figure out how to do it better - it'd probably be best if you just closed up shop now to save all the fishes.
Hey everyone, I am writing the first sustainable restaurant review in China. The first, you hear!? And should you wonder what is so sustainable about it; it is because I made an effort to be. Like I wrote this on a computer and did not use a piece of paper. There!
That is about as sustainable as this restaurant is or gets to be; declare that you make an effort. While listing your menu with the same endangered fish as everywhere else. Canned tuna is still tuna, and none of the staff seem to be aware that many species of farmed fish still require wild catch first. If you want to claim credentials, at least demonstrate what your so-called efforts are. URBN hotels buys back its carbon. A store like The Freshary is LEED certified and has other certifications for the organic ingredients they use. They walk the talk. This place is not even the talk. Just the effort to ride a bandwagon.
But we're here for the food, all bogus marketing claims aside. Well, it is a Shoka done less well for more money. About sums it up. Still does these weird combos to try and be 'culinary', by stuffing canned sirup fruits in rolls. Those fruits bits are room temperature and the rest of the roll is cold, so at first taste, you think you got something muck in your mouth. None of what we had made me want to come back for more. Owh and in a hint as clear as daylight; we asked for the manager and were told he was having his break next door at Kush. Must be because he prefers that food over his own?
The only impressive part about this place is the interior, very nicely done. They did the same approach for this as the ambition with the food = the same but with an added twist. But for the interior the wood and pattern thing works to infuse something modern and contemporary. It fails as far as the food is concerned.
Overall - there are many more and better choices you can make for a little sushi fix. Sustainable or not.

We discover this new japanese all you can eat all you can drink with a 248RMB menu. It's a little bit more expensive that what we are used to seing for such a menu but totally worth it. The food is delicious and fresh with a large variety of different dishes.Tthe service is clever (they do not bring you everything at the same time)and the decor is fresh and simple : not less, not more.
Really good sport!

Went with a group, did the RMB 248 'infinity menu'. I would have probably felt ripped off if it were 148. The only quality item was the sashimi, which they really couldn't mess with too much. The 'tuna' rolls were canned tuna fish, and the more innovative rolls had... uh... mango? and canned peaches? eww. It was like Chinese converyor belt sushi. The tempura wasn't terrible, the hot food was ok... you get the point. Also, the food didn't come too quickly, which is standard with all you can eat places. Oh yeah, and they give you a cocktail included in the price. With wasabi in it. It's a terrible joke - smells like passionfruit, looks like passionfruit, and tastes like a mouthful of sugery-vodka-passionfruit-wasabi.
The decor is gorgeous - I hope they revamp the menu, or just skip the cocktail foofiness and embrace the fact that their competition is charging half the price they are.

I went to Sushi Abuse with friends, service was long and not really good. Food less better than Shoka before and price higher. Decoration is good for lunch but for diner quiet simple. Their is other Japanese restaurant with better food and price.
