Check out my review at Waga Xinmei.
Just want to say, I've been there many times, due to its location to my job. The place serves meager portions of substandard fare at boutique prices, and with service that pretends to concern, but is actually incompetent and unaccountable. But when they continually serve food that's beyond old, that you can't stomach, it's time for me to reevaluate my choice. Tired of throwing my money away at Waga.
One less customer.
There are a ton of Western restaurants whose owners know very little, if anything, about the service and food industry, and especially how to provide an adequate eating experience.
Most of the advertised spots border on amateur and quick dollar mentality with overpriced food that cost a fraction to make as in comparison to what a person pays, low quality, untrained staff, unfriendly service, no policies developed for how to deal with customer complaints, etc. It as though, since we're in China we don't have to be professional. And this extends into many other markets as well. It's a thriving mentality, to lower yourself to the local mentality because you know you can get away with it, and it speaks clearly about what the real goal is here—the almighty yuan!
Walking into most restaurants you must ask for a glass of water and then you get the hard sale to buy a 2 rmb bottle of water for 10 rmb, or something to that extent.
No reason to only blame Wagas, as so many others are guilty of the same thing. When are these companies going to change? Since there seems to be an endless market of people moving in and out of Shanghai, these places will pathetically survive on their adverts and friends who come to these blogs and write ridiculously subjective blog statements.
These restaurants need to do some big self-criticism and learn what makes a good venue, a good venue. Hint, hint! It's not how much money you spend on interior design, and how aloof you and your staff are towards your customers. So I will give all of the Shanghai Restaurants a little reminder: The Golden Rule of the Service Industry—The Customer Is always Right!
Read this article on an Australian magazine, just thought i would share it..
"This cafe is highly recommended to me by my ex-patriate friend and it was here that i realised that with good training, good coffee was possible anywhere.
Cafe Wagas serves illy coffee and judging by the barista's skills and coffee making technique, he has done extensive training. He heat the cups, brushes out the group handles, extracts perfect espresso and does as good a job as possible with the impossible milk!"- Cafe Culture Magazine issue 9 2007
Waga's desserts are good. Can't complian, reasonably priced. Their pasta, however, are overcooked. Lots of pasta, but very little meat and veges. Drop by for a quick bite, but considering all the good food in Shanghai, I'll pass.
Visit Wagas Xinmei and Hong Kong New World Tower regularly for their good half-price breakfast-deal. Together with the relaxed music, it makes it my favourite start of the day.
No serious complaints about the servcie either: shop-supervisors like f.e. Jason and Allan know their customers' and treat them in a personal way. Some "growing pains" may appear occasionally but hey: no big deal!
I had always adored Wagas in the past. I always thought it was tasty and cozy albeit it was busy from time to time thus added a bit of mess in the service routine.
However, I had the most unpleasant experience happening to me today after biting into a piece of broken tile from a Sandwich ordered at their Citic branch. What was most upsetting was the reaction I got out of the servers. Nobody really apologized, no manager ever showed up. No one from that shop cared that fact that I almost crakced my tooth and possibly swallowed some broken pieces. I didn't even get an explaination from anyone.
I was disappointed to the extreme of their lack of professionalism and would NEVER go back there again after having been a loyal customer of theirs for the past several years.
On all my vists to Shanghai I make a point of dining at Wagas, the value and the quality of the food is exceptional and the staff have always been both polite and attentive at all times.I feel as if I am part of the family every time I walk in the front door of any of their outlets, especially when I am greeted by the chain's vivacious Chinese/Australian Manager Jackie. Both Wagas and Jackie are what makes Shanghai such a facinating and diverse city to visit.

What the fuck!
Seriously... 1st visit last friday. More to see what the hype is about, cuz I felt the only one who hasn't decended those escalators to eat at wagas nanjing lu. Place was near empty, it was 715pm friday. We thought cool; all the more for us.
So we go sit in front of the counter. And get this menu. Which confuses the crap out of us; pasta at 28rmb after 6pm, except the ones with the * cuz those are more expnsive, but cheaper then usual. Owh, and ad 6rmb if u need chicken strips. That is too much work already!
WTF 1 = we want to order, but the staff tells us to order at the counter. WTF 2 = I get up and go to the cashier, who tells me to call over the waitress! Now I stand in front of the cash register, the waitress is going to take my order. Why can't we order sitting down like everywhere else? Especially giving the mini size of this joint. WTF 3 = I order our food, and get told that the lafa bread is out. No more. Have to scout that menu again... Ok then = the burger. "no more burger". I go HUH?? how do you run out of burgers??? "You have to come more early, now it is too late". So... what do you have then? Salad.
Our drinks are ordered as well, and then she gives the bill to me and tells me to hand it back over to the dude at the register. We are standing right in front of it. Does she get electrocuted if she hands it over to him? WTF 4 = the dude is punching in a bunch of things, but asks me to wait before he does my bill. Only when I tell him to come get me when he is done does he proceed.
My GF's side salad = I kid you not; 4 leaves of salad, three slices of cucmber. That is it. My chocolate powder 'power shake' tasted very chocolate free. We were served the dessert of another table. And in the middle of a conversation, one of the girls interrupts us going "are you done now?"
What the fuck?
Wagas used to be one of the good place in my head.Good means good food, good service, good location. It's well-known in shanghai.Early this week after a meeting,i went to the one on nan jing xi rd with my friend becoz we were around the area. There were just a few seats left. However,we took the menu, then there was this Filipino girl stook beside us.Carelessly,i asked something in shanghainese, she responded in a very cold and disturbing tone"ting bu dong"along with a hight-headed look...we realized right away.I dont think i wanted to look at her again.Besides her,ALL other waiters are so nice, patient, polite. It just surprised me how self-glorifying she acted.Too bad,she couldnt choose who SHOULD go to that place.im sure she would if she could. My friend and i stayed after dinner for a bit to talk. Then i saw there was a white male, maybe a regular customer sat cross over us,she went sat down beside his table started chatting with him right since he started eating his meal till we left, still, she was chatting with him like she's on a date, haha.oh well.thats not my point.the point is as a leader of the staff in a service place, she should have behaved better than the fact she always shows that she's "higher" than others in the house which isnt true.I understand why user RIO was so upset about his experience. But I would give her a slap and tell her to fcuk off if i were RIO.
My personaly opinion on Wagas is that its still a good place.Hopefully they can find someone better to manager the staff or at least train her how to serve people instead of someone is actually worse than all the staffs she had to lead.I dont think anyone else want their moods to be destroyed by having the same experience as us there.
I went to Wagas and I had an enjoyable time. I found the staff and in particular the Filipino manager very nice and had no problems getting what I was after. I would recommend it on to anyone without hesitation.
Very very bad service, very very rude. I think it is a girl from the Philippines. We had to wait for one hour for our pasta and she basically told us to f*ck off and even blamed other staff for the delay.
Wagas may be western by serving but VERY chinese by service. How about the Huaihai Zhong outlet = big black panel outside claiming 50% off breakfast if ordered before 10am. Just don't go now... cuz they only open at 10am!
Even when they had their panel outside at 9:45am, the staff looked as if we asked them to solve quantum physics or so = they had no clue why we questioned their promotion.
aahh... china aye?
