If you think you've reached the end of Taojiang Lu, keep going and you will stumble upon the gates of O'Malley's. With Guinness and Steak pies, chips, televisions and outdoor benches O'Malley's captures that authentic Irish feel. This bar/restaurant is in a mammoth rustic building with a lawn big enough to accommodate lots of kids. On the weekends it can be quite the jamboree. Quiz nights and stand-up comedy during the weekdays.
Agreed--very overpriced, but pretty tasty burgers, chicken sandwiches and the like. Also, for wintery Shanghai nights: they have a fireplace. With an (almost) roaring fire. Toasty.
The Smallest Beers in the World
Going to a pub like O'Malley's one expects strong, rough men, big plates of food and especially big glasses of strong beers. Neither of these are to be found at this "pub". The beers are served in S and L, note that there is no medium, hence one might expect S to be regular but don't be fooled. O'Malley's is not ashamed to put a tiny baby beer (0.25l) of draft Guiness on your table and call it a BEER. For this disappointed you will then be charged 40RMB. In the hope of finding more satisfaction in the food, we then ordered a jacket potatoe. We received a plate with a small potatoe covered in something, which we figured must have mistakenly been put on there as sour cream. So after this nobody can blame us for not trying. We then moved to another famous European pub, which out of fairness will not be named here, where they serve beers in respectable sizes and the food comes on massive plates.
O'Malley's... I would love to have one of those burgers again and those french friends, yum. I've been deprived of real "western" food for months now and maybe the burgers don't top the charts back home in the states but for me it was the best one and the only one I've had in months! The place was pretty quiet but it was a Thursday. I was expecting there to be a lot more foreigners but I'd say it was pretty much split 50/50. The free pool was nice and there was free darts but the board was monopolized but another group of players the whole time we were there. The live music was ok, it was kind of "folk-like music" and there was just an older guy and some woman (his wife??) singing but they performed alot of classic tunes. The barstaff was very friendly as was our waiter. When our taxi first dropped us off we were a little confused until we realized that we had to walk through a big wooden door in the cement wall that lined the streets. Then you walk into a little garden like area and there is outdoor seating - very nice.
i dont know if it was because i only eat dry rice here in china but those burgers were delicious..after loading up on a large sized chicken burger and fries i wish i could have had another one! the menu looked good, my friend and i could have just ate everything! thee's free pool but only one pool table..but since we went there on a thursday night, there wasnt a rush to use it..umm the live music was alright, maybe if there were more than just two people in the band it would have been a little better. this place is certainly a good one for a weekday evening.
Besides the rustic interior many Irish and English guys hanging around there, that makes O'Malleys to a "real" pub.
Thumb up for for the atmosphere, thumb down for the prices!
