Comedy This Weekend: Thai Rivera, Zainab Johnson, and Zmack(!)

Apr 14, 2016 | 10:49 Thu
Pretty big weekend for comedy in Shanghai. Two international headlining acts are performing, plus a couple improv shows. Originally, Joe Machi was supposed to perform at The Pearl theater, but his visa situation didn't work out. And so it goes... In response, The Pearl teamed up with the Shanghai Comedy Club, and is hosting in Thai Rivera, an L.A. comedy club regular who's been featured on Comedy Central. His shtick: edgy material on race and homosexuality. OooOOooO, controversial! Should be good. Starts at 9pm on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are 180rmb in advance or 220rmb at the door.

More comedy shows after the jump...

Kung Fu Komedy Club's international headliner this week is Zainab Johnson, a former contestant on NBC's Last Comic Standing. She began as an actress and now works the circuit in clubs in L.A. and New York. She's doing three sets in Shanghai: 8.30pm on Friday; 8pm on Saturday; and 10pm on Saturday. You can check out some of her material here.

Shanghai's most prolific improv group Zmack has a couple of shows lined up for the weekend. The first one is at Sasha's, the Shanghai Comedy Club's home for the time being, at 8pm. Zmack is bringing in their student groups, featuring 25 improv comedians for one big show. Price for that is 70rmb, including a drink. The second show happens on Sunday at Lucca. They're doing a space-time themed show from 6.30pm. Cover is 60rmb with a drink.
