[The List] Summer Camps 2021

From soccer to science, all Shanghai's got this summer.

School’s (almost) out for summer! What are you going to do with your newly freed rug-rats? Let them nip at your heels as you lounge in the sun? Surely not. Put them to work. Expand their minds. Shanghai has heaps of summer camps to keep the young’uns entertained and educated. Here’s the run-down.

 

Mixed Sports

Martial arts school Blackbelt Fit will be running 9-week self-defence summer camps in Korean martial art styles taekwondo and hapkido from the end of June to the end of August. All the classes are for 6–13-year-olds and will be taken in English. Full day camps are from 9.30am to 2.30pm and half day camps are from 9.30am to midday. Sports for life are teaming up with Onyxx for a week-long summer sports campfor 4–12-year-olds. Their highly experienced coaches will be leading classes that cover a range of sports daily. From swimming to basketball, and soccer to dodgeball these summer camps really tick all the boxes. Classes will be taught in English. Full-day camps (9am-3pm) are 2,999rmb per week and operate in Puxi only. Half-day camps (9am-12pm) are 1,899rmb per week and operate in Pudong only. Tennisline are doing 5-day camps by trained professional coaches for kids age 3-12. They are one of the leading tennis academies in the city with multiple professional certifications (ITF, PTR, iTPA), so if your kid can't get enough of rackets and balls, this one could be for you. There will be two camps this summer, the first goes from July 5-9, and the second goes from July 12-16. Both camps are from 9-11am. It's 2,400rmb for one camp, or 4,600rmb for both.

 

Education isn't just done in the classroom. Skateboarding school IconX are holding a 3–5-day intensive skateboarding summer camp for 6-15 year olds. The program, designed for multi-level campers, is all about creating a fun and safe environment for kids to learn skateboarding and of course, make a few friends along the way. Classes are from 9am-3pm at four IconX locations in Shanghai: Huamu, Jing'an, Crystal Plaza, and Linkong. Courses are running from the June 21 to August 27. Bushido means the way of the warrior in Japanese. It's also the name of a martial arts school in Jing'an. They're putting on a week-long summer camp for 4-12-year-olds to train your little warriors in the foundations of self-defense. They'll be holding classes every week from July 5 to August 27 with a maximum of 12 kids per class. The classes run from Monday to Friday, 9am-12pm. One week is 1,600rmb but you can get early bird price of 1,100rmb if you book before June 5. Register by scanning the QR code on the poster. 

 

This week-long summer camp offers Brazilian Jiujitsu, boxing, and youth fitness to 6–14-year-olds. Kids will learn the basics of self-defence from a die-hard group of ultimate fighters. They are running morning classes from 9am-midday from July 5 to August 27. Each camp costs 3,000rmb. If you sign up before the end of May you'll get the early bird price of 2,500rmb. Kids Summer Basketball Camp

Capital Sportz Summer Youth Basketball Experience is doing an 8-week full English summer basketball camp at the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS). Classes are suitable for anyone aged 6-18. The camp, with its skill development curriculum, is designed to let the participants become better, more disciplined players on the court in a safe and friendly environment. All staff are highly experienced and include professional, collegiate players and coaches from the U.S.

Single-day, weekly, and full summer options are available, along with sibling and group discounts. It's 1,250rmb a week before May 31; 1,400rmb a week before June 13; and a group of 3 kids is 1,350rmb.

6-10 year olds are from 9-11am, 11-13 year olds are from 11am-1pm, and 14-18 year olds are from 1-3pm.

 

China Sports United offers a variety of 5-day summer camps for 5–14-year-olds including multi-sports, swimming & water polo, hip-hop (8+ only), and basketball (which can be attended by kids 14+). All CSU summer camp coaches are fully licensed and qualified, and some are even former pro athletes! They'll be using well-defined, tried and tested curriculums to deliver sporting fun for the littluns. Courses run from July 5 to August 27. Summer Soccer Camp

FD Football Academy offers week-long full-day and half-day soccer camps for boys and girls from the age of 4-16. They also offer residential camps for boys from 9-16 years old in Suzhou from July 18-24 and in Shanghai from August 1-7. The camps focus on the technical, tactical, physical and mental aspects of the beautiful game. Prices vary depending on the camp and limited spots are available, so best to register as soon as possible if you want to grab a place. Skill-based Camps

Here's one for the fashion orientated. Calin Fashion Academy are holding two two-week fashion academy summer camps for 6–18-year-olds. Your young fashionista will be given all the guidance they need to design their own fashion line including fashion illustration & fashion design classes, draping & sewing classes, zero waste and sustainability concepts to name a few. They will then choose and make one of the items in their fashion line with the skills they've learnt, and finally model their creations in a professional photo shoot. At the end of the two weeks students will be awarded with a certificate and be able to take all their stylish new clothes home with them. The camps run from July 12 to July 23, or July 26 to August 6. All classes are conducted in English and light, healthy snacks will be provided. Little Medical School is offering a week-long medical summer camp for 4–14-year-olds from July 5 till August 13. The week-long camp consists of 5 lessons with topics about veterinarian skills (pet care), nutrition (food safety), paediatrics (baby care), wilderness safety, and an inventor's camp. The classes run from 9am-4pm and include lunch. There is also a pick-up service available for those who need it. The five-day camp is 4,500rmb per student.

 

Icona Design, otherwise known as Bewtin Innovation Park, is hosting Hackability for Mobility summer camp for kids 13-18 from June 28 to July 2 and July 5-9. Students will be grouped into inclusive design teams to help a person with disabilities overcome a mobility barrier. By partnering each team with a person with disabilities, students will learn how to apply human-centered design to create truly unique solutions. Summer Culinary Program

Culinary institute and cooking school CieCAS is offering a series of week-long cooking camps for teenagers, and parents with kids. Throughout the five-day camp your child will be able to pick up cooking techniques and recipes for dishes from a wide range of global cuisines, with each day focussing on a different cuisine. The list of cuisines they will cover over the course of the summer is pretty enormous with France, Italy, Mexico, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Germany, Austria, Spain, and Switzerland to name a few. After a busy school year behind a desk, how about letting you and your kids feel that call of the wild? There are three hands-on 5-day Family Summer Camps in Yingchuan village near Huangshan from July 12-16, July 19-23, and July 26-30. You'll be out in the wilderness learning nature crafts, creative games, natural sciences, practical outdoor skills, and engaging with activities to boost your child's critical thinking, self-confidence, risk assessment, and team-building skills. The camp will include activities for the budding natural scientists such as chances to observe and discuss the relationships between the local ecosystem and its wildlife, instruction on how to identify the local animal and plant life. There will be nature walks, games, and wild cooking classes.

It's suitable for 1.5-9 year-olds, and broken down into age-appropriate groups. All the Montessori-inspired classes will be taught using both English and Chinese. There will be two camps: July 19-23, and July 26-30.

 

Imagine several groups of grade 3-5 students try to pull up a summer bazaar at a fully enclosed camp. They have 6 days before the final showcase. One group will be responsible for building up the venue, one group will be practicing a bilingual drama show written, directed, and acted by themselves. There will also be one group of students who are in charge of planning and organizing the bazaar. This summer, HD Bilingual School Shanghai is organizing a 7-day, 6-night international summer school at Le Camp in Suzhou. Students will be able do just that, and experience some of HD Shanghai's featured courses. Oh, and of course there are plenty more activities to keep them busy, over 40 in fact. ATV track, jungle trekking, live CS, kayaking, sailing, rock climbing is just part of the fun. There are also more than 40 Aussie-style caravans as accommodation units for the little campers. The whole camp is 7,999rmb with no extra charges.

 

For your young dancers, Elite Dance Company offers dance classes for kids ages 3 to 6 years old. The classes go from 9.30am-12.30pm and include ballet, jazz and craft, with break times between classes for the little ones to rest up. Dance Box Summer Camp

If you've got a little mover in your family, Dance Box summer camp might be the one for you. Dance Box's week-long camps encourage children to explore dance, grow their technique, their confidence, and their love for dance. They offer ballet, jazz, Latin, Hip-Hop, drama, vocal, and conditioning for kids from 4-13 years old. Classes will be broken down into appropriate age groups and anyone is welcome to join, regardless of ability.

 

If you've ever visited teamLab's borderless exhibition then you know that it offers artworks without boundaries, that move out of rooms, communicate with other works, and change as you experience the exhibition. At this STEM summer camp for 7–13-year-olds your kids have an opportunity to create their own infinite showroom. During five-day camp, they'll be given all the tools they need to make a borderless exhibition like teamLab's through classes in production, installation, design and implementation. Got some kids into arts and crafts? Craft'd are holding eight weeks of 2 and 3-day summer camps for the creative minded. Any one from the ages of 6 to 12 is welcome to join. They'll be getting hands on and making things from June 28 to August 20 with different topics each week. A few highlights include Girl Power Camp, Fantasy & Galaxy Camp, and of course, Harry Potter Camp. To ensure that each kid can get as much attention as possible they've made sure that the teacher-student ration stays at 1:4, with a max of 15 kids per class. Tokylabs Space Camp

You can sign your kids up to a Mars mission with robot makers Tokylab. Their weekly camp revolves around alliances going head-to-head to build, program, and operate robots. Suitable for grades 5-11, the kids will be guided by adult coaches and mentors as they develop STEM skills, practice engineering principles, innovate and work in teams. Kids love this stuff. Summer Dance Camp

Shanghai City Ballet have a dance camp. It doesn't just involve ballet though. The week-long camp includes classes in Zumba, Jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop dance too. All the classes are suitable for children age 3-12 years old. They've got half-day and full-day options available. The half day camp runs from 10am-1pm and costs 1,800rmb per week, and a full day camp is from 10am-4pm and costs 3,500rmb per week. Multi-week and sibling enrolment discounts of five per cent are also available.

 

Language

 

That's Mandarin have been holding Chinese language summer camps since 2008 and have totalled over 5000 participants since. Their camps make Chinese learning easy, useful, and hands on. They run from 1 day for under 12s to as long as 1 month for kids from 12-17. Students will experience the traditional Chinese culture in an immersive way and get to try their hands at traditional and modern Chinese arts & crafts, play Chinese games, and practice the language in a real-life setting. There are opportunities to visit important historical and cultural sites around the city and learn to talk about them in Chinese, and build new friendships with people from all over the world. HD Bilingual School and Scientia Academy have put their minds together to design a curriculum that includes the best of both their expertise with courses for to improve English proficiency in students from grade 1-7. The two-week courses focus on topics such as "Legends of the Blue Sea," "Exploring Ancient Egypt," "The Da Vinci Code" and "Crossing Time and Space - The Steam Engine Era". Tiny Tots is the only independent English language international kindergarten in Shanghai. Their week-long summer camps, developed by experts from the Early Childhood Department in Harvard University, are all about offering a multi-cultural environment for the littluns to study English in. They'll be taking cross-disciplinary classes to up your kids literacy level and reading comprehension through close readings of 1-3 books per week. Reach Out

ReachOut Education gathers teams of international teachers to provide English language education for children at different stages of their English study. The camps run from 4-8 weeks and are suitable for anyone from grade 2-9. There are vocabulary and grammar classes to help build a solid foundation for early learners, and they can also help kids to improve their reading and writing skills. A quick run down of some classes that are offered: History, Geography, Writing with Purpose, Grammar, Vocabulary, Media and Journalism, and Literature Club. In addition to English classes, they also offer education in math with a curriculum of lessons on the Singapore Olympics, calculus, and IGCSE.

 

Day care, education facility and serial summer camp organisers Awesome Kids Club are holding their 11th annual summer camp. The 3-and-4-week long camps are geared towards raising the English ability of 2–12-year-olds through literature. All four weeks are themed around a book. They've got some big titles; Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Roald Dahl's BFG are on the list. Prices for each week are different depending on how many weeks you sign up for.
