School’s (almost) out for summer! What are you going to do with your newly freed rug-rats? Let them nip at your heels as you lounge in the sun? Surely not. Put them to work. Expand their minds. Shanghai has heaps of summer camps to keep the young’uns entertained and educated. Here’s the run-down.
Martial arts school Blackbelt Fit will be running 9-week self-defence summer camps in Korean martial art styles taekwondo and hapkido from the end of June to the end of August. All the classes are for 6–13-year-olds and will be taken in English. Full day camps are from 9.30am to 2.30pm and half day camps are from 9.30am to midday. Sports for life are teaming up with Onyxx for a week-long summer sports campfor 4–12-year-olds. Their highly experienced coaches will be leading classes that cover a range of sports daily. From swimming to basketball, and soccer to dodgeball these summer camps really tick all the boxes. Classes will be taught in English. Tennisline are doing 5-day camps by trained professional coaches for kids age 3-12. They are one of the leading tennis academies in the city with multiple professional certifications (ITF, PTR, iTPA), so if your kid can't get enough of rackets and balls, this one could be for you. There will be two camps this summer, the first goes from July 5-9, and the second goes from July 12-16. Both camps are from 9-11am. It's 2,400rmb for one camp, or 4,600rmb for both.
Education isn't just done in the classroom. Skateboarding school IconX are holding a 3–5-day intensive skateboarding summer camp for 6-15 year olds. The program, designed for multi-level campers, is all about creating a fun and safe environment for kids to learn skateboarding and of course, make a few friends along the way. Bushido means the way of the warrior in Japanese. It's also the name of a martial arts school in Jing'an. They're putting on a week-long summer camp for 4-12-year-olds to train your little warriors in the foundations of self-defense. They'll be holding classes every week from July 5 to August 27 with a maximum of 12 kids per class. The classes run from Monday to Friday, 9am-12pm. This week-long summer camp offers Brazilian Jiujitsu, boxing, and youth fitness to 6–14-year-olds. Kids will learn the basics of self-defence from a die-hard group of ultimate fighters. Capital Sportz Summer Youth Basketball Experience is doing an 8-week full English summer basketball camp at the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS). Classes are suitable for anyone aged 6-18. The camp, with its skill development curriculum, is designed to let the participants become better, more disciplined players on the court in a safe and friendly environment. Little Medical School is offering a week-long medical summer camp for 4–14-year-olds from July 5 till August 13. The week-long camp consists of 5 lessons with topics about veterinarian skills (pet care), nutrition (food safety), paediatrics (baby care), wilderness safety, and an inventor's camp. Icona Design, otherwise known as Bewtin Innovation Park, is hosting Hackability for Mobility summer camp for kids 13-18 from June 28 to July 2 and July 5-9. Students will be grouped into inclusive design teams to help a person with disabilities overcome a mobility barrier. Culinary institute and cooking school CieCAS is offering a series of week-long cooking camps for teenagers, and parents with kids. Throughout the five-day camp your child will be able to pick up cooking techniques and recipes for dishes from a wide range of global cuisines, with each day focussing on a different cuisine. You can sign your kids up to a Mars mission with robot makers Tokylab. Their weekly camp revolves around alliances going head-to-head to build, program, and operate robots. Suitable for grades 5-11, the kids will be guided by adult coaches and mentors as they develop STEM skills, practice engineering principles, innovate and work in teams. Kids love this stuff. Shanghai City Ballet have a dance camp. It doesn't just involve ballet though. The week-long camp includes classes in Zumba, Jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop dance too.
