After running annually in Las Vegas since 1967, Asia's first Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Asia opened in Shanghai on Monday, with virtual reality helmets, bathtub speakers, self-piloted cars, models in nurses uniforms, shanzhai Google Glass, future cars, and naturally, some mystery uncles with expensive cameras. CES is the biggest electronics expo in the world, running annually in Las Vegas since 1967, but this is their first foray into Asia. The move makes sense -- the world's largest market and production center of new technology. The affair went down in the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, the same venue where mouth-breather / ghetto cos-play convention China Joy takes place.
Over 15,000 attendees came through on the first day, which was not open to consumers. Seemed like Las Vegas' CES minus the pre-show entertainment and tech giants like Google, Samsung, Sony or LG. And that's fine -- this is the first go. It's not going to begin like the Vegas event. Still lots to see. Intel, Voxx, Audi, Mercedes, and Monster all came out, as did lots of local electronics manufacturers. Hisense, Foryou General Electronics, and e-commerce sites JD and Cogobuy were showing off everything from curved TVs and smart milk tea to smartwatches that double as traffic cards.
Let's go see the future of consumer electronics.
Wearables, smart home products, drones, and VR headsets dominated the first hall. The latest products from Apple Watch competitors like Pebble and Withings Activité were available to try.
Hebei Inspector Gadget vibes on this Smartwatch traffic card combo with an 11-day battery life.
These models don’t seem very happy wearing Cool Glass ONE, or maybe it was the Dongbei style floral pattern on their dresses that upset them.
Yes it's Goggle2, the sequel to the popular Goggle glasses series. And some other VR shit.
Think I saw this movie when it was called The Lawnmower Man.
Enthusiasm.
Preparing for an upcoming TED talk called "this is a computer".
The newest in gonna-get-hit-by-a-car core technology...
Japanese brand Facial Fitness PAO is here to tell you that your smile is wrong. But they can fix it, with electronic pulses.
Fix 'yo face, green tea girl.
Training for future wars.
The best sense -- Hisense. Showing off those curved TVs.
A little throwback tech to the OG '67 CES.
Something that absolutely no one needs.
Cutting-edge DJ technology, soon to appear at The Mansion.
Monster’s wireless, waterproof speaker. Seems cooler than that Bluebooth shower head.
"Do you know trap music? So high!"
Piano teachers and guitar teachers will soon be replaced by smart instruments.
And chefs will be replaced by robotic hands. This guy was cooking meals on Monday, no lie.
Carmakers have CES in the U.S. is more of a car show now. This is also the case here, with automakers occupy the second hall. Lots to see there. Audi has an impressive showroom, packed with important-looking magnates of the future–car world.
At the Player's Ball…
All-electric, self-driving Audi R8 e-tron. Can't wait to pick up one of these, used, sometime around 2034
Like all conventions here, brands brought out the ladies, but not to the exploitative level of some conventions.
And when the ladies come out, so do the uncles.
There you go. A glimpse at the technology that will make our lives more connected, more convenient, and possibly dumber. Look out for this at a market near you sometime in the next couple years.
