Here's something to do that will make you feel good about your Saturday: Sounds of Fear festival at 2 Kolegas. The day-long event is a charity festival to raise money, awareness, and positive thoughts to combat violence committed against women. The event is a reaction to the sad, maddening, depressing, and infuriating case of Natalia Ponce, a Colombian who was the victim of an acid attack on March 27 of this year. Her case and other like it have galvanized an international movement to address and combat violence against women in countries around the world through marches and gatherings, and this event in Beijing joins an international itinerary of many others like it. It's being organized by a few creative-type Beijing residents and features a big line-up of local bands and DJs playing music, people making art, things being eaten, things being drank, people installing things, and just a general spreading of the love and support all around for a good cause.
SmartBeijing talked to one of the organizers, Diego, to get more of an in-depth idea of what's going on for Saturday...
Sounds of Fear is an event created to support a friend who was attacked and more generally to fight against the abuse of women. Here’s is our manifesto:
This is for Natalia.
A dear friend of ours, Natalia Ponce, a 30-year-old woman from Bogota, Colombia, was recently attacked by a stalker. The man who has since been arrested, threw a container of acid onto her, to disfigure her for life.
She was rushed to the hospital, where she remains in intensive care. She has already undergone multiple surgeries, and many more are expected.
This case has been spread through international media, and has struck a common chord in the consciousness of society. Too many cases of women being attacked, whether by acid or other means, have gone without mention. It's time to lend our voices, to prevent this tragedy from befalling any other innocents.
Unfortunately, these unspeakable acts can, and do happen anywhere and anytime. We are committed to do what we can to help alleviate the pain and suffering of those who have befallen this tragedy. And we pledge to give our voices to prevent them from continuing.

Yes, it's worldwide. Since the attack on March 27 lots of events have taken place, coordinated by family and friends, and people interested in supporting this cause, all around the world. On April 5, a major protest march occurred in Plaza de Bolívar in Bogota, Colombia to reject acid attacks and call for tougher penalties...
And there have been subsequent gatherings in Bogota for the cause. Internationally, pacifist and peace marches have occurred in universities all over South America, Spain, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and even Beirut in Natalia's name.
Support has also come online at the Facebook group, with 39,000 people from aorund the world joining the group to show their support for Natalia and lend their voice to the oppose violence against women. There have also been charity exhibitions, art events, and concerts to raise money for the cause, and this one in Beijing is a part of that side of the effort.
Coming up in the next few months is an art exhibition, “Scars Are Not Just Skin Deep” at The Cob Gallery for Natalia in London, UK, and Felipe Bedoya, a well known artist in the European galleries will organize events in different cities to raise awareness using Natalia as inspiration for his art works (in UK, Italy, France, the US, Colombia, and Mexico).
Yes, there will be music (bands or DJs) all throughout the event. Artists from Beijing, well-known or less well-known, all answered with great enthusiasm when we asked them to play. We have DJs outdoors from 2pm to 9pm, and then 3 live bands and more DJs performing inside until 4am.
