Cansei de Ser Sexy, a.k.a. CSS, are kind of the ultimate hipster band. Pretty, ethnically ambiguous Brazilian girls who play a messy cross between electroclash, disco-punk, and nu-rave. Despite getting panned by Pitchfork, they rode a huge wave of hype in 2006 after their debut album blew up, with tracks like "Alala," "Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above," and "Music Is My Hot Hot Sex." Take this for example:
Is this art? Is this shit?? I don't know, but it's fun, and still holds up pretty well eight years later. At least they're a band, playing music with some soul instead of yet another DJ dropping some EDM from a laptop. In these eight years, they've released four full-length albums, toured exhaustively around the world, had their music appear in Apple commercials, and lost a key member of the band. This member, Adriano Cintra, allegedly wrote 99% of the band's music and owns 70% of the copyrights, as detailed in an angry, hard-to-understand blog rant you can [attempt to] read right here.
Despite his departure, CSS lives on, and they're playing in Beijing this Friday night. Advance tickets are 200rmb. Ahead of this, I caught up with guitarist Ana Rezende over email to talk about the World Cup (surprise!), music videos, and dragons.

: I'm home, watching Costa Rica vs Italy for the World Cup (Go Costa Rica) and I just ate a sesame bagel with avocado."
: Yes! I love the World Cup. I'll be flying during the next Brazil game, and we're all bummed about it, but happy we might be able to see the games in China. It could be a lot better for Brazil if it wasn't mishandled. The investment was badly done, and I am very skeptical about the legacy it'll leave. I am happy though about the World Cup itself. So far it has been the absolute best I've ever seen. A lot of goals and a lot of unexpected results. For a soccer lover it is an amazing World Cup.
: Not at all. We are much better in scheduling tours in a way [that] we are happy. The recent shows we did in Japan, in January, were very special and memorable. All three of them.
: No, and it's very special when we go somewhere for the first time. I hope to get in touch as much as I can with the people and the food and know as many places as possible in our short stay."
: No. In fact I stopped watching Game Of Thrones after the last episode of the first season because a bunch of mini dragons showed up."
: Thank you! Blondie, "Rapture" Rolling Stones, "Like a Rolling Stone"
: Nothing will kill Rock. Certain types of bad rock should die anyway, but I don't believe that any style will kill another one.
I am not aware of how the scene is this days, but I have the impression that there is a lot of things going on. It's easy to make music and share these days, and I think that makes the scene larger.
: That's a hard one. Maybe Beyonce.
: CSS came to China and Everyone felt very happy?
: Noodles, but some people in the band like rice better. *** CSS perform live this Friday night at Hit Fm Live, which is what they're calling Tango these days. We're selling pre-sale tickets for 200rmb right here.
