Lone
Konx-om-pax The mix makers: The latest in premiere Chinese underground music catchall web portal Wooozy's "Offline" series happens tonight at Dada, with a banging double feature. Nottingham-born, London-based producer Lone headlines with a live A/V set, giving Beijing a sample of his highly personalized tracks, built entirely from his home-recorded samples. Providing the visuals is Glaswegian producer Konx-om-pax, who will also pre-game with a warmup with a DJ set. These two have been on tour together for the last six months, and landed in Beijing a few nights ago. We tied one on with them the other night and got them to recommend some of their personal favorite tracks from their own repertoire, and some of their general recommendations of top-tier dance floor burners. Here's what you're in for tonight:
***
Acen - "Trip to the Moon
Lone says: That's my favorite piece of music of all time. It blew my mind as a young boy, and 20 years later it still blows my mind. It's the most hardcore thing I've ever heard. It's just a journey. ***
Lone - "Jaded"
Lone says: It's the most beautiful piece of music I've done. The name comes from my girlfriend. It's the most sentimental piece of music that I've ever made. The main sound is from xylophone, I played it myself. ***
Lone - "Pineapple Crush"
Lone says: It was really, really quick to make, and it was the biggest buzz I ever got from a piece of music I've made. It was as quick to make as it is to listen to. I'm proud of it because of that. Now it takes a lot longer, now it takes at least a month to write a track. But "Pineapple Crush," that was like an hour. It came together, and hearing it, the whole point was capturing a vibe in one hour. ***
Outlander - "The Vamp"
Konx-Om-Pax says: On R&S records, a classic. Absolute belter. When the main melody kicks in, it's so massive. Dancefloors just absolutely melt. It's such a big, obvious piano riff, it's unbelievable. It's one of R&S Records' most famous hits. ***
Aphex Twin - "Donkey Rhubarb"
Konx-Om-Pax says: Warp Records. The music video is full of characters that look like Teletubbies, just doing pelvic thrusts. The main melody sounds like it's all done on steel drums. It just stands out as a really silly, daft rave tune. ***
Konx-Om-Pax - "Let's Go Swimming"
Konx-Om-Pax says: One of my own favorite tunes that I've made is the last track on my album for Planet Mu. The album's called Regional Surrealism. The track is called "Let's Go Swimming", it's the last tune. It's only about two minutes long, an ambient track. The main sample comes from a story tape that I've had since I was a baby, that was produced in 1984. It's a very small sample of incidental music, in between Hans Christian Andersen fairytales ready by Penelope Keith. It was made on very early 1980s digital synthesizers. It sounds like Boards of Canada. But I basically sampled a very simple section of it, and sawed it down and added my own bass line. Even though I made it, it's one of my favorite bits of music. It reminds me of being young and running about the garden with no clothes on, being able to piss in the flower beds and not giving a fuck. ***
Multi-Ordinance Tracking Unit - "Unspecified Enemies"
Konx-Om-Pax says: By one of my friends, who also goes under the name Louie Digital. It's so infamous because lots of the Detroit techno guys swear that it's made by some dude from Detroit, but it's not. It's made by a very nice English friend of a friend. And it's the most stripped down, jackin' techno track that you've ever heard. Supposedly it's all made from "Model 500" (Juan Atkins) samples. This was recently re-issued by Numbers Records in Glasgow. ***
Vexed - "Pop Pop"
Konx-Om-Pax says: This brings me to Rubadub Records in Glasgow, a world-famous record shop. They have ties to Underground Resistance. This is back in the day, even before they had a dubstep section. Nobody really knew what dubstep was, it was just this thing from London. It was kind of like jungle but half-time, it wasn't categorized. But at that time there was a record by these two guys called Vexed, "Pop Pop." Originally it was released on a Bristol label called Subtext. One of my favorite wobblers. ***
Hudson Mohawk - "Thunder Bay"
Konx-Om-Pax says: This came out on Warp a few years ago. Ross [Hudson Mohawk] is a big fan of using preset brass noises on all his tunes. You know, like your first Casio keyboard brass noise. This tune is an absolute destroyer. And he's got a really slow HudMo beat under it. And then the breakdown just goes into really cheesy happy hardcore chords. If you can see Hudson Mohawk DJ, you should do it. He's the ultimate crowd pleaser. *** Catch Lone and Konx-Om-Pax at tonight's Wooozy Offline show at Dada. They're supported by local heads Microhate and Veeky. 60rmb if you turn up before midnight... otherwise 80.
