At the risk of getting too formulaic with it: this week we've got a visiting ultra-DIY chaotic noise punk band from Germany, a two-day anniversary celebration for a beloved local haunt, and some future-sounding bass music from the UK crossing the continent for the first time. Let's do this:

Don Vito (photo by Totally Dublin)
First up: Don Vito from Leipzig. Take it away, Facebook self-introduction:
The band’s description of their music 'hyper kinetic instrumental noise tohubohu' couldn’t be any more accurate. The moment Don Vito let a bit of chaos out of the sack all appendages within hearing distance begin to fidget hysterically. It is like being hit with the spray from a machine gun. Welcome the apocalypse of rock smiling at you from three lunatics who appear to thrash at their instruments more than to play them. But somehow they never loose continuity in this chaos of interwoven high speed-grooves.
Yeah, that pretty much reflects what I've heard about this band. Last time they were here they crawled up the walls of D-22 and almost destroyed the PA speakers or something. Don Vito's been kicking & screaming for a decade, releasing their first album, I, in 2005. Right off the bat they nail this kind of epileptic funk noise grind thing that I can't quite put my finger on. Reminds me of DNA a bit, early skronk no wave vibes. Here's I:
Basic idea is a deconstructed approach to "traditional" rock instrumentation. That's the theme that's snaked through Don Vito's hefty discography. Here's a more recent sample, from a 2013 7" featuring a bass clarinet being forced to resemble a digital didgeridoo:
Gonna predict this will be one of those "Holy shit were you at that _______ show?? That was INSANE" shows of the year. Just a heads up. Don Vito is playing on Friday @ XP along with Snapline, Alpine Decline, and XHYXXH, and on Saturday at Mako with Mamer and Luvplastik. Both solid!

We're past mid-May at this point, so it's time to observe all the traditional Beijing rites of summer: tiny seat dining, more beer than usual, remembering 2 Kolegas still exists and has a bigass lawn. Looking further down the calendar we have the 4th Hanggai Festival and 4th/final 'dazeFeast happening, but the first official 2K rager is always their birthday jam, which goes down this Friday and Saturday. Nine years in the game — pretty damn impressive.
The lineup over the two days includes a lot of 2K regulars: Buyi, Li Dong, DH, WHAI. Day 1 features a rare non-festival set from Re-TROS, which in my opinion is worth cost of entry alone. Haven't seen them play live in a while but I ambiently heard them from the main stage at Strawberry this year and they still sound great. Here they are at Strawberry 2012:
Generally speaking, expect two nights of HYPER CASUAL vibes, copious beer, daytime picnicking and afterhours crunchy yaogun jams lasting 'til sun-up. Find the full lineup/schedule and ticket info in the listing.

And for your weekly dose of electronic music: Bok Bok, founder of influential UK label Night Slugs. Bok Bok & Night Slugs exist in the same conceptual world as LA label Fade to Mind, whose Total Freedom just delivered one of the weirdest dancefloor moments of the year last weekend. He was playing this loop of a soul singer screaming or something, over abstract noise, for about two minutes. All the strobes were on full blast and people were literally keeling over into the Beijing squat in anticipation of bass, which eventually came via a sort of ambient remix of that classic Lil Jon tune. Pretty good!
So Bok Bok's making his way from South London to BJ under the aegis of Chinese-language music blog Wooozy.cn's new Wooozy Offline series (the first one was New York Transit Authority last month). Not sure if he's playing a live set or DJ, but he's just about to drop a hotly anticipated new EP — his first release since 2011 — so best guess is you'll hear some of that. And it sounds quite good. Lots of bass if you're into that. Here's a good interview with Bok Bok about Night Slugs, his extracurricular production work, and his upcoming record, Your Charizmatic Self. And here are a few jams off the latter:
In Beijing Bok Bok's supported by the Do Hits crew, which means a fairly deep night of brash stompers from Sulumi / Guzz / Howie Lee / Veeeky / Billy Starman. Lotta bangers for yr buck. That's Friday at Dada.
