Who knew jazz was such big business? JZ has. For a long time. They see Jazz at Lincoln Center occupy a top floor venue on Nanjing Dong Lu and they're like pshaw. Blue Note opens up a giant spot up in Hongkou and JZ's like goddamn millennials. The old man on Shanghai's jazz scene is not out of the game yet, hence their newly announced, 1,000sqm project JZ Live, set to open properly on January 18, 2020.
It's described as a "jazz living space," an idea your college roommate Aaron pitched years ago, but which is actually just bebop for "multiplex." The second JZ Club, a livehouse, workshops, music instrument shops, studios, a bakery, a cafe where you can listen to records and eat "French food." It's everything a jazz musician needs to barely scrape by, under one roof. Disparate elements coming together in harmony. Call it fusion.
