Five years since their last release, Japanese psychedelic pioneers OGRE YOU ASSHOLE (OYA) unveiled their new album Nature and Computers (自然とコンピューター) last year, sparking a tour that now extends to five Chinese cities due to overwhelming fan demand. Known for live performances that reinvent studio tracks with avant-garde improvisations, OYA has built a loyal Chinese following since their 2010 overseas debut, while simultaneously launching their self-produced DELAY event series in Nagano and Osaka.
This tour showcases OYA’s signature layered soundscapes now infused with synth and electronic experimentation – still crafting those slow-burning, hypnotic crescendos that dissolve audiences into pure sonic submission. The album’s central tension between organic spontaneity ("Nature") and synthetic control ("Computer") manifests in frontman Manabu Deto’s deliberately contradictory compositions: cascading synth lines interrupt folk-tinged melodies, while Krautrock’s mechanical rhythms collide with psychedelia’s freeform drift. Building on the rhythmic innovations of 2020’s New Kind of Man (新しい人), the band pushes further into uncharted grooves where vintage analog gear and cutting-edge sequencers coexist uneasily yet brilliantly.
The shift began with 2023’s Outside the House (家の外) EP, recorded amid Deto’s growing obsession with synth collecting. His home-turned-studio brimmed with decades-spanning keyboards, their unpredictable textures shaping the album’s fusion of human imperfection and digital precision. When OYA hits the stage this August – Beijing (8/5), Shanghai (8/6), Hangzhou (8/8), Guangzhou (8/10), Shenzhen (8/11) – expect their most audacious live interpretations yet: a ritualistic dismantling of the very boundary between nature and technology.
