Belgian-Chinese electronic artist Bolis Pupul is bringing his deeply personal Letter To Yu live show to China. Known for his collaborations with Charlotte Adigéry and the Soulwax collective, Bolis fuses emotional storytelling with sharp, danceable production. This time, he’s returning to his mother’s homeland with a set that’s part memorial, part celebration—a journey through memory, identity, and sound.
“This is where you were born / 59 years ago / And I’m finally here / Why did it take me so long.”
Belgian musician Bolis Pupul wrote these lyrics for Letter To Yu, a heartfelt song dedicated to his late mother, who was born in Hong Kong. The piece captures his first journey to her hometown, filled with emotion, memory, and rediscovery.

Born Boris Kor Tom Zeebroek in Ghent to a Belgian father and Hong Kong–born mother, Bolis grew up surrounded by music—his father loved Frank Zappa, his mother Neil Young, and discovering Beck’s Mellow Gold and Odelay sparked his creative fire. In 2015, he signed with Belgian label Deewee, and his 2022 collaboration with Charlotte Adigéry, Topical Dancer, produced by Soulwax, won wide acclaim for its smart, humorous take on race and identity.

In 2024, Bolis released his debut solo album Letter To Yu, a musical tribute to his mother, who passed away in 2008. The album traces his emotional trip to Hong Kong’s Ma Tau Wai Road, where she was born, blending electronic textures with field recordings, family voices, and traces of Cantonese and Mandarin. Songs like Ma Tau Wai Road (featuring his sister Salah Pupul) and Completely Half explore belonging and loss with touching sincerity.

Critics hailed Letter To Yu as one of the year’s best—The Guardian called it “a playful yet moving exploration of Chinese heritage,” and Pitchfork praised how “Pupul finds catharsis in the dancefloor.”

After two DJ sets in China earlier this year, Bolis now returns with a live tour—performing in Beijing, Shanghai, and at Hong Kong’s Clockenflap Festival. This marks his first full live performance on his mother’s homeland—a journey of sound, identity, and love.
