Description

A high-definition screening of The Diary of Song, a Hong Kong Repertory Theatre production written and directed by Poon Wai Sum. The play reimagines characters from Water Margin through a reflective and character-driven narrative.

About the Show

This is a high-definition screening of The Diary of Song, produced by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre. Written and directed by Poon Wai Sum, the play draws from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, focusing on the character Wu Song and his experiences.

The story begins with Wu Song’s encounter with the tiger at Jingyang Ridge, after which he enters the world of Liangshan heroes. The narrative follows his observations of life among the outlaws, where routine and restlessness shape their daily existence. When conflict arises between Song Jiang and Li Kui, Wu Song is tasked with leading a group to track Li Kui after he leaves Liangshan.

Through this journey, the play explores the motivations and inner lives of the characters, presenting a reinterpretation of familiar figures through a more introspective lens. The work is structured as a series of “diary” moments, reflecting both the story’s events and the character’s internal perspective.

Why Go

This production revisits well-known characters from Water Margin but shifts the focus toward internal reflection and character-driven storytelling. Instead of presenting action-heavy sequences, it examines the emotional and psychological states of the characters within a familiar narrative setting.
