Opened in 2000, C's is one of Shanghai's most well-know and enduring dive bars, and they've got the toilets to prove it. With graffiti all over the walls, loud music blasting throughout its cavernous rooms, and some of the cheapest drinks in town, C's is a mainstay on the Shanghai underground music scene -- look for weekly electronic nights from independent promoters. But even if you're not there for the music, it's one of the best places in town to get blitzed or just catch up with friends in one of the many rooms. Crowd is mixed, often transient, and full of characters: foreign students, locals from the neighborhood, younger out-of-town Chinese, English teachers, the unemployed, and the unemployable. The music programming is real diverse: sometimes they have bands and live performances, and some nights feature DJs playing genres ranging from house and techno to hip hop, psytrance, and jungle. Many of the city's musicians, producers, and promoters got their start here, thanks to the openness of the place. And there's never any cover. Check the listings for special electronic music one-offs, which are frequent. The city keeps changing, but C's is one of the few constants. Tip: they also sell really good cookies at the bar.
