Low-Key Metal Toy Museum Hidden in a Hongkou Factory Park

Born in Beijing, now based in Shanghai. Still judges every roast duck against the ones from home.

Easy to miss, this one. The Shanghai Metal Toy Museum is inside a slightly worn industrial park in Hongkou, with barely any signage to give it away. Take a didi and you'll probably spot it. Otherwise, you're looking for an unremarkable entrance, an elevator on the left, and a ride up to the fifth floor. That's it.

Upstairs, it's small, one loop and you're done. However, the collection they have runs to 3,000+ pieces, mostly vintage metal toys from China and abroad, with a focus on the mid-20th century. Trains, ships, castle sets. Rows of tin cars, wind-up animals, early mechanical toys. Some are basic, some surprisingly intricate. Everything's grouped by type — static, wind-up, electric — so you get a loose timeline of how these things evolved.

It's not a polished museum. No design overhaul, no interactive anything. A bit worn, a bit dated, and very quiet. Feels more like someone's long-held private collection than a formal exhibition space. Weekdays, you might have it to yourself. Weekends aren't much busier.

It's about 2km from the nearest metro (Jiangwan Town Station, Line 3). Free entry, open Wednesday to Sunday. If you're into old objects, mechanical details, or just curious about this kind of niche nostalgia, it's an easy detour. Give it an hour, maybe two.
