There is no sky full of stars at the Starry Sky Exhibition (白夜星辰展), the latest wanghong ("internet famous") exhibition to vie for your attention and Moments in what has been a wanghongful year. The large, themed exhibition, in the Raffles City Changning mall, is designed as an "immersive experience", which just means it's a backdrop for cool selfies. That's what everyone is here for, anyway. This exhibition starts off with a lot of promise. An abundance of fiber lights creates a dreamy atmosphere and a beautiful backdrop to photos — the only reason you come to these things in the first place. In the next room, spotlights shine on and reflect off disco balls. Still doing well. But then things start going meh.
The exhibits become lazy and half-assed, with badly produced CGI aliens and a jumble of projected phrases in Chinese in a pathetic attempt to add some “depth” to the narrative. Come on. This is wanghong. We are not here for depth. We want the photos. Give us good backdrops, not contrived storylines.
Described as an immersive art and entertainment space, Starry Sky was, in fact, just another low-key wanghong bummer, a theme we’ve noticed again and again as mall after mall try to cash in on the trend.
Somewhere in there, I looked up towards the sky, hoping to see into the infinite galaxy and beyond, looking for the magic in the stars. But all I could see was the ceiling.
The Starry Sky Exhibition runs until 15 January 2019 from 10am-10pm. Tickets are 128rmb for one or 140rmb for two.
