In Shanghai for over four years now. Fitness lover. Very amateur badminton player. Love reading. Sometimes I write about the little things in this big city.

Shanghai's last newspaper stand, which was supposed to close by the end of 2025, has reopened. The new location, just 300 meters from the old one, is at 430 Zhapu Lu, only a 5-minute walk from Exit 2 of Sichuan Bei Lu Metro Station (Line 10). The stand is right across from The Pearl, nestled in the nostalgic charm of old Shanghai.

Jiang Jun, the face of the stand for nearly 40 years, had planned to retire, but his customers kept him at his post. The new space is brighter, with stacks of newspapers and magazines ready for browsing. Regulars walk in and, without a word, Jiang already has their paper ready. For him, it's more than a business. It's a daily routine, a quiet connection with the community.

On the day we visited, it wasn't Jiang behind the counter, but his long-time partner, Ms. Xu Yiping. Xu has been working alongside Jiang for 28 years. Now living in Yangpu, she still wakes up every morning before 5am and makes her way to Hongkou to help run the stand, come rain or shine.

What's special here isn't just the paper you buy, it's the atmosphere. From vintage magazines to the latest editions, you'll find yourself walking down memory lane. For many younger visitors, it's a chance to explore print media in an era dominated by digital. In a city where everything is about speed, this little newspaper stand is a pause button. Want to slow down and rediscover the warmth of printed paper? Head over, grab a newspaper, and share a moment with Shanghai's last newsstand.
