In Shanghai for over four years now. Fitness lover. Very amateur badminton player. Love reading. Sometimes I write about the little things in this big city.

Just outside the west gate of Shanghai University of Sport in Yangpu is University Sport Book Store, a bookstore-café built around a giant blue staircase that rises 17 meters through the middle of the space. Part bookstore, part study spot, and part architectural curiosity, it's one of those places that makes you stop and take a second look.

Designed by Studio YUDA and Studio NOR, the interior is organized around a stepped structure called "Mingyue Mountain." The staircase works as seating, bookshelves, and reading space all at once, while smaller stepped forms are scattered throughout the store as benches, displays, and casual work spots. You're free to move through it, climb up and down, and settle wherever feels right.

Beyond the architecture, it's actually a pretty comfortable place to spend a few hours. There are desks and counter seats throughout, plus a café serving reasonably priced coffee (18 RMB for an Americano). The selection is mostly sports-related, and there isn't a huge range of books. You're probably not coming here just to shop.

It's probably not a destination worth crossing the city for on its own. But if you're already in Yangpu, heading to a nearby event, or looking for an unusual place to work, read, or grab a coffee, it's an easy detour and a pleasant one at that.
