Go see this show before it ends! It's one of the year's best, and might bring you to tears. This posthumous solo exhibition by the late Shanghai-born conceptual artist Chen Zhen features large-scale installations, as well as sketches and notes about the rapid changes happening in Shanghai in the '90s. Created at a time when he was increasingly aware of his own health, some works reference the human condition, all incorporating materials as diverse as alabaster and crystal; chamber pots and coins; and digital media. Sometimes we can see our homeland clearer from abroad.
Since 2003, SmartShanghai has been independently covering Shanghai for the city’s English-speaking community. Our guides are curated by people who’ve lived here for years—honest, opinionated, and free from spam, sponsored rankings, and fluff.
