I'm not sure what you want from your local bar?

I do. It's everything this place gives me.

I've been a few times, but last night they just got it all right and then I realised, actually they've never not.

The space here is intimate, a 40 foot long, quite narrow with a long wooden bar to the left, the lighting just the right side of dingy, the music veers through the decades from knowing, semi ironic aural winks from the 70's onwards. Service is always attentive, if you're lucky it'll be the tall thin english bloke from Exeter front of house who gives it old school low key, and a stunning 5 ' 4" pixie behind the bar mixing your drinks.

The crowd is mixed, you'll get younger laowai, professional girls in the know and occasionally groups of wealthier local guys who who treat the place like a rich man's Perry's.

What you won't get is anyone who makes you feel like doing an impersonation of the Preacher Man from Nathan Barley.

Every page of the cocktail list is a semi obsessive testament to the team's attention to detail and priced accordingly (although the 4 drink Happy (2) Hour(s) is excellent value). These drinks really are beautifully crafted, alcohol heavy but very well balanced - I haven't, but some might try their wood aged cocktails or Bourbon aged beer. The menu is made up of small and perfectly proportioned rich comfort food, think spaghetti and meatballs and spicy peppercorn fried chicken tenders - luxury junk food made with excellent ingredients.

Everyone here really cares about what they do and it really shows, in the knowledge that they don't need any help from me to do well, it's still worth noting quality when you see it.
    Nice evening!

So I'll admit: I'm easily influenced by what comes up on my feed.

Back story (feel free to skip): I have been to Union Trading when it first opened. I liked it but there's always somewhere new or someplace familiar where we would end up instead.

So anyways, when I saw that they had started a new happy hour -- I was intrigued enough to check it out with some friends.

The bottom line: nice! Really nice well made cocktails like the negroni or something summery like the aperol spritz... all excellent! Plus, the food: the spicy fried chicken was wonderful! Also the porky grilled cheese sandwich -- was fighting my husband for the last few bites. Next time, we will just order another one and deal with doing an extra workout at the gym later.

I popped into this place randomly a couple months ago. I'm not a big fan of the speakeasy trend but at 6pm-8pm this place is quite allright. AND they have the best beer in Shanghai on tap--the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. The taste is indescribable because if I say butterscotch you might get the impression that it's a chick drink and it's most definitely not. It clocks in at 8% ABV too making is a near triple. That's good. That's real good.

So I've been coming on the reg for a few weeks. Maybe once a week. Just for an after work beer, when there's no one at the bar except maybe one other random person. The staff are really tops. They know when to make small talk and when to leave you alone.

So here's the story. I went in last week and, dammit, the Kentucky Ale was out. Okay, well, that's life. They told me to come back in a few days. I did. It was a Friday. They had a new keg of the good stuff. Allright!

For some reason though it took a really long time to get that keg tapped. They wrestled with it for like 20 minutes. They called people. People came and looked at it and wrestled with it. And then by some miracle they got it going. They were really sorry it took so long and so they gave me a pour in a pint glass, because of making me wait.

    That was nice.

I finished that then they asked me if I wanted another. Sure! They gave me another pour in a pint glass. "Tonight we give you pours in the pint glass". Again, just being nice because I had to wait for the beer.

So, that's great service. That's the fun stuff. Shout out to Union Trading Company.

I saw a picture of one of Union Trading Company’s drinks featured on Smart Shanghai when they first did their review and decided to stop in with a friend. The downstairs is taken up almost completely with a bar and there is a smallish seating area upstairs. My friend and I each tried a few drinks. He had the Shanghai milkshake (or some such thing) and I had something with peach brandy. My buddies drink was a little too thick for my taste, but my drink was fantastic. I’m not normally a fan of anything other than the classics, but I have to say this won me over—not overly sweet, very boozy, and super refreshing on a warm summer night. Second round I ordered a Manhattan and my buddy had a mint julep. The Manhattan came with a candied cherry that had spent a good amount of time in both cinnamon and brandy. It had very complex flavors and was highly enjoyable. The drink itself was fine, if not a standout. The mint julep was also good. We also ordered the scotch quail eggs and chili cheese tater tots. The scotch eggs were fine but a little over cooked. They came with a fairly mild Dijon mustard, which was appreciated. The tater tots by themselves were fine, but the cheese and chili really made them a dish to remember. Served in a cast iron skillet, the cheese was well melted and distributed throughout. The chili was awesome.

The general atmosphere was really excellent. It had a bit of the whole apothecary thing going on with a variety of bottles throughout. Service was pretty impeccable, I never had trouble flagging down the bar staff and orders were delivered pretty quickly. My water glass also remained full throughout the evening, a nice touch. The music was the sort of playlist I always wished I could create on my own. There was everything from Gang Starr’s Full Clip to 70’s funk, to modern indie rock, and it all worked really well together.

Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and see this as my new go-to bar in the neighborhood.
