Munchies is a cheap, owner-operated American quasi-fast-food restaurant. It's casual and honest and tie-dyed. On offer: typical snack bar and sandwich shop fare like hot dogs, Cincinnati-style chili, burgers, peanut butter shakes. Good for cheap lunches and stoned weekends.

Most solid simple American breakfast I’ve found in Shanghai yet.

They keep it simple and authentic. Not a Croissant, salmon, and espresso shop, but a black coffee, ham omelet, and Tabasco kind of joint. Not a place to impress fancy guests, but a place to get your eggs and bacon on. They keep the breakfast menu simple, omelets, breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros, pancakes, French toast—that’s about it. They don’t shy with the jalapenos for the tex-mex varieties. While the selection may be small, they do them right. They just started serving breakfast all day—awesome. Big win is the home fries, which are crispy spuds cooked and seasons just right.

Price is very reasonable compared to other similar options nearby because they keep it simple. Breakfast comes with a cup of hot brewed coffee. They know what a cup of regular black coffee is—a rare blessing hard to find at some other fancy brunch spots.
They don’t just serve breakfast, though. Great lunch/dinner options as well with items you’re not likely to find elsewhere. Philly cheesesteaks (delicious), hot dogs, Cubans, chili fries, even banana splits for dessert…all solid and taste delicious. American bottled beer for around 25-45RMB to wash it all down.

Only downside is that they open a bit late on the weekends at 11am, so if you’re looking for an earlier option you’ll have to grab pancakes down the street. Opening an hour or so earlier on the weekend would be nice. One time the power went out briefly a few times, but they were still serving and folks didn’t care. They fixed it quickly.

Décor is comfortable with sufficiently sized booths. No idea what they were thinking about the theme (some mix of '50s diner, log cabin, and burnt out hippy), but it’s cozy. The second room has a nice portrait of a baby flying with wings trying to catch some kind of phoenix? Awesome to look as while downing a big plate of huevos rancheros and a root beer and thinking about what you did last night. Streaming some old tunes from ‘90s US radio guaranteed to invoke nostalgia. Apparently, there’s some internal disagreement with management regarding cleanliness, because they display health inspection certificates with both the yellow :| face and the green :D face—my buddy commented that the latter was probably a Taobao purchase. That’s cool.

Overall, Munchies is a dream come true. So good it has turned into a routine. I wish I was eating there right now.

Bonus: There’s a pet store next door. So you can pop in to look at little dogies and cats while rubbing a full belly and wearing a giant grin of satisfaction.

Been a infrequent patron since they first opened. In the beginning there weren't many options for Western eating in the vicinity. Nowadays, I've mostly forgotten about this place, but during Chinese New Year not much else was open in the 'hood. So in I went and ordered 2 Cuban sandwiches to go from the woman/co-owner that has been there since inception of the place. When a waitress hands me an order, I confirm "2 cubans, right?" She says yes. I bike home and dig into my sandwich. Yuck--it's essentially a sauerkraut sandwich because they gave me 2 Reubens instead of Cubans. I'm friggin pissed because it's not the first time this has happened, once was for a phone delivery, and I ordered from the same woman. Considering she is the co-owner and has been working the joint for several years you would think she would be able to decipher Cuban from Reuben already. For Pete's sake! And their Rueben sandwich is nasty!

Munchies is perfect for those wake and bake days when you have a bad case of the munchies. Their huevos rancheros is one of my favorite breakfast dishes in town and they have a great selection of thick meal-in-itself milkshakes. Their hearty chili or cornbread are a taste of Americana.

Even if you're not dazed and confused, Munchies is pretty damn good.

My day was bad until I got home and remembered I had a munchies burrito in the fridge. I tried to just eat half. But it was too good. I ate the whole thing. And would've had a second one if I had ordered it. Worth the calories and the 44 kuai.
