It was really fantasic when I'd been to Bar Rouge after long time home-away from Shanghai. Pulse from home, my beloved city - Shanghai, and multi-culture environment from this bar. Greatly recommend to these ShanghaiNing who're home-away for long. Happy New Year, ShanghaiNing. Be in it:)

If you like hookers and pretentious foreigners drinking overpriced crappy cocktails, go here. If you are not a loser, try somewhere else.

I can't stand this place. The bar people say we will give you a drink if you tip. OUtrageous service. Views obviously increidble. No places to sit. Not a nice place copared with Glamour Bar.

I like to impress elite hookers with my expat package. I like to wear suit. I like to listen at myself speaking with French accent. I like to emphasis what an important manager I am. I think I am so handsome I can get any local girl. Did you noticed I'm wearing Boss shoes? It feels great when the waiter brings me a bottle of Champagne (please read this last word with French accent), with all the fireworks I'm sure that everyone realizes how cool and great I am. Unfortunately Bar Rouge is packed with guys thinking they are as breathtaking as me, so I have to remind them I am the man, by giving them a good old pretentious and superior look. The fact that they are all doing the same back to me and all other guys contributes on a large scale to the nice atmosphere of the place as you can imagine. Bar Rouge is a tailor-made venue to me. Actually It's the most appropriate place in the whole Shanghai scene for great and beautiful people like me.

OOOOOOk...What is goin'on here ?One of the hottest club in Shanghai ????Is it considered a sickness here to have a dancefloor ???What are good DJ's if you can't dance nowhere? What is a bar with so many reserved places with no one sitting in them ?Staff with funeral faces ?Crowd that is so weirdly mixed,i even saw a whole family with 2 kids having a beverage while a drunk uncle like was grabbing a desperate-to-wed Chinese chick ...Huuuh ... What ever ...went there 3 times to start a night and swear i'll never go back again.

Everything what I hate is combined is this crap bar. I have been there 2 times and it was a nightmare. I have never seen so much fake people per square meter. Western losers who come to China to show up and Chinese junks who try to imitate them. I sincerely hope all these people will come down to earth during the next recession.

Not one of my favorite places in Shanghai. Though sometimes when there are special parties and private events it is pretty fun. Usually, the place is packed with pretentious older types who most often are accompanied by their escort uh..i mean female companions. Foreign clients are often rude and impolite. Can you say euro trash? Last time i was there, one of them sneezed in my face (i hate to admit it but i may have had my mouth open at the time).. and just walked away! The music may be better suited for a poor 80s techno MV. Pretty view, but icky sand from beach outdoor patio gets all trapped in my strappy heels. The pictures of the ladies and big red lips on the walls kind of creep me out.

Question: Has Bar Rouge changed name to "Dom Perignon" lately? Last weekend I was there I got the feeling there's nothing else than champagne in the drink list either...

Bar Rouge? Espectacular VIEW. But on the other hand if you are a foreigner you will be seen and treated like a milking cow: 300 RMB cover charge ( not charged to locals). Then inside you will be approached by beautiful and"friendly" Asian girls who will be asked to be invited for drinks. I guess the bar pays them a commission for every drink as they will be asking for drinks every other minute (about per drink). You will dance and have lots of fun, but you will need deep pockets.. Enjoy! Evening June 2, 2007

Bar Rouge is alright. I'm from L.A. and it is comparable to a mid end club. Nothing out of this world. Drinks are like 8 dollars and were not the strongest. Go there with people you know, one thing that it was EXACTLY like LA was that everyone thought really highly of themselves. House music was good though.

user Smart1

Oh how i loathe this place. The crowd are quite simply clueless. These people have no idea what a club is supposed to be. Wannabe's and hookers, mixing with overpaid losers and gold diggers. If you like music, avoid this place and it's regular rotation playlist (why bother paying a DJ who can't mix?). I love the way that the Champagne comes with a giant firework in it - could people be any more insecure (or any naffer)? LOOK AT ME, PLEASE LOOK AT ME, sorry not me, look at my MONEY! Pathetic

user Skunk

Sat May 13th 2006

Masses of foreigners stand, champagne in hand, overlooking the Bund or getting tanked inside to celebrate another week of ‘surviving’ Shanghai. “Oh that reminds me”, says a red faced, portly foreigner. “Did I ever tell you I tried to speak to a little Chinese man down the street? Lovely man, but doesn’t speak a lick of English. Terrible pity.” Is this 2006 or 1926?

One word: OVERHYPED. The Good: Spectacular view, huge open balcony for smokers and cooling off. The Bad: Everything else. The bartop flames are novel, but just once or twice. The decor is a nice attempt, until you read the posted signs to be careful because those gazebo-like structures are "fragile." The bartenders are a joke, unable to understand the variety of cocktails a bar catering to mostly foreign clientele should know. Yes, drinks are unreasonably both weak and pricey. No coat-check=WTF? The list goes on and on and on... The Ugly: If you're a wealthy (or just wealthy enough with the exchange rate) white, male, foreigner looking to appease your high maintenance whore of a Chinese "girlfriend" so you can get your yellow-fever/pedophilic-fantasy rocks off, you'll love it here. If you're in your 20s, male, and not fabulously keen to financially spoil or otherwise slot-machine a girl rotten, forget about it. If you're in your 20s, good-looking female, and have no problems with whoring yourself in one form or another to milk the men, go for it. If you're otherwise normal mentally or physically, flee. Don't waste your time and at most, visit once just to confirm all the shit talking posted here.

To me Bar Rouge, is my Café d'Anvers and Nanno (the 2 best clubs/bars in Belgium). I love the music, Italian Fireflies, Bob Sinclair... Great decoration, nice and decadent, true it's pricy but BR is the 2nd Club you go to in the evening not the first! Big variation of people present, which makes it only better. Best view ever and amazing party pics... (duh, I'm on it). Been already in so many party of the world and I would definitely recommend this club. Coolness. Beijoss.

user the_dude

Mon Feb 6th 2006

Don't go there! It's crap. The drinks are fucking expensive. A table costs around 250 Euro and the entrance is about 5 Euro. The decoration has no real style - only some really bad french fashion style. It's better to book a ticket to Monaco and go there to a club - over there it is cheaper than in Bar Rouge (believe me, I am from monaco; I know what I am talking about) Staff is unfriendly, and takes way too long, music is shit! The only good thing on this club is, that they have a nice few to the pearl tower, but that is all. Dudes, there are way better clubs out there, like VIP room, if you have a little bit of extra money.

This bar simply sucks. 80 RMB for a Gin Tonic? Almost without Gin? And no dancefloor? No live music? It`s a joke. But worst of all, the bar staff changes prices, the more you get high, the higher the prices they ask...and they get away with it, as the management around (here I might be wrong, are these 2 bottle-swinging foreign guys, doing same tricks as we have seen 15 years ago already in Hong Kong, really management?) does support their staff when they ask for a hundred or so for a beer. It`s just a rip-off and -being a German it reminds me to this- Bar Rouge in one sentence: St.Pauli has arrived in Shanghai (without the sexy environment), unless you think being together with old hookers -really old ones- with too much make-up, and drunk young - really yound ones- students without too much behaviour is sexy. Forget Bar Rouge is my small litte reco.

user bnzpootee

Sun Jan 15th 2006

you know me and my mates went there after getting totally tanked up at WINDOWS .... and.... compared to windows drinks...these ones are so watered down.... I mean, 80 RMB for a glass of tap water is kind of to much.... As well I can tell you that the guy behind the bar, Antonio, sucks..... he thinks he is the most handsome guy in the world but in fact, when I grabbed him between the legs, all I could feel was a tiny carrot..... Anyways, its a place to be seen and if you like to get other people to check you out go for it.... I prefer to go to a place where guys just grab me straight away..... just like my daddy used to...

Bar Rouge is amazing! Being the first week i was in Shanghai, i didnt know anybody...so i just went alone..and had a great time...unlike some clubs there..your just left alone getting wasted at the bar...but there the people were roughty awesome and willing to keep the drinks coming..Great music..hot aussies and englishmen..the balcony's view makes the night even better

As cool as a Shanghai bar gets...interpret that as you will. You've got to be in the mood for it. Go here when you are already pissed, and want to feel a part of the 'groovy' Shanghai scene with other wannabees and rubber neckers. Yes the view is great, can never remember the music, same housey sh*t usually - people dance pretty much everywhere (not always very well). Yes it does take forever to get a drink - there are just a couple of barmen and they do like to put on a show (it's almost worth the wait to see them set alight to the the bar - some crazy flaming cocktail), oh and their pricing can be arbitrary to say the least. But it's one place you are guaranteed to actually taste the alcohol in your cocktail - I nearly passed out from a simple V&T which was about 50% Vodka - woo hoo!! Bring it on.

i would definately recommend bar rouge to everyone! its a good idea to be pretty tipsy before getting in there cuz it does take a while to get a drink..i remember buying one drink inside and how i got the rest of my drinks is a mystery..lots and lots of foreignors (there were more guys and girls)..lots of good looking guys..dont remember the music but do recall dancing so it must have been good! very nice view from the patio, thats where i met my dutch guy!

I had a fantastic Friday night at Bar Rouge! The crowd was about 85% foreigners, which was so refreshing for me (a foreign living in Nanchang, a city with only a handful of us westerners). It was great to go to the club and socialize/flirt with guys that are native English speakers. The cover charge was only 50rmb and I really don't remember or know the costs of the drinks because we had gone to happy hour at JW Marriott's on the 40th floor (as many martinees as you can drink between 5:30-7:30pm for 100yuan) and we were feeling pretty good. My other drinks were all bought for me buy handsome gents. The bar was really classy and very hip. I met people from all over Europe, Italian designers, hot Dutch guys, a fellow American that grew up in the suburb next to mine in Chicago, Jennifer Anniston's bodyguard, etc. etc. I loved the music - it was definitely club music but a lot of the favorites were played and it was at a volume that it was still possible to hold a conversation. I really liked being able to go out on the patio and look at the beautiful view. There is a coat-check, which I wish we would have seen when we first came in. The bathrooms were very clean but it took awhile to get to the ladies bathroom... you had to go down some stairs and through a hallway (or maybe it just seemed like a long way). All in all, I had a superb night and give it an A+ rating

If you go to Bar Rouge, you will wait 1 hour for a drink. If you complain, Rouge does a good job of suggesting you to go to another bar, especially when you complain to "Mr. Thinks he is Tom Cruise in Cocktail" and "Mr. Slippery hands" and that is if you can actually get their attention since they spend more time tossing drinks in the air than servicing the patrons. The only two things that is worth going is the view and the chinese staff who are the only ones taking their job seriously and trying to make up for the lack of hospitality from the "stick-up-the-arse" drink tossing, drink falling bar tenders.

user boredinshanghai

What could be a great venue is sadly one of the worst. Bar Rouge staff are ridiculously rude, take hours to dampen a thirst and then throw whatever small change is left after you hand over a 100 kuai note for ONE drink into their tip jar. Talk about arrogance! The music sucks, not that the lame crowd of geeks from back home actually care. It's the sort of place where people with money think they can buy style. Posers aplenty, bad tunes and some of the WORST service Shanghai has on display is what you will find at this bar. That said, if you want to show visitors what it is that makes Shanghai such a disturbing place to live sometimes, nothing sums it up more elegantly than paying 80kuai for a drink on the terrace of Bar Rouge. Try not to do it on a weekend though, as you'll have to pay 50 kuai just for the pleasure of entering this wankfest.

Bar Rouge is the worst place and the best place to see the bad attitude of bar service in Shanghai. Bar tenders are all very rude, but full of themselves. The only thing might be slightly worthy of going is its view. But with its terrible service, it might just ruin your good mood for the view. Speaking for my own experience. Oh...also, plus be sure to check the bill if you don't want to overpay.

I spent several friday nights at Bar Rouge and it was very fun. Everybody rolled up in smooth cars such as BMW's Z, Mercedees M class, and plenty of convertibles. pros *definitely a place to see and be seen *well-dressed men and women *getting attention from guys was not hard - show a little skin, a little smile, and a sexy little walk (all that isn't a problem if you're an asian girl! yeah ladies!) *bar flare performances - they lit the bar up and poured liquids into champange glasess *consistent cover charge *plenty of girls -so there is always a good ratio of men to women (always another girl to divert unwanted attention) *techo most of the night *outdoor deck is spacious and gives a beautiful view of the area - good break from the body heat, music, and good air *everybody knows how to dance and friendly grinding is welcomed and returned *plenty of seats to sit on - or a lap *bathrooms very clean most of the night - and very far from the men's so you always feel safe *always a watchman during afterhours to get a taxi and chase away the derlicts *not much of a line to get in and the turnover is good so the crowd changes as the night goes on cons -bar service (little slow) - be friendly but aggressive - just like driving in the streets of shanghai - wave your hand, make your request, pay the cashier, and while your waiting enjoy the surroundings. -you can not request music -once or twice everynight they played some rap, and R&B -the crowd loved it but the DJ always went back to techo. I suggested some christina, Gwen, and outkast, but the request was denied. -reserve a table ahead of time or you won't get one later in the night b/c people watch through the pink curtains is a must -too many Japaneese men! all they do is stare and smell like fish! unclassifiable +seems that independent female contractors were widely availabe and accepted +there was also a sort of VIP thing going on with the passing of a small neon flashing ball into people's glasses...HMM +it was recommended by a Mariachi band with a shirt saying "I'm too sexy for my shirt!" Well, I usually have fun there and you will always meet a interesting mix of professionals, students, and just cool people. Its all about fun and enjoyment and yes have fun show some leg and skin find out what's it like to walk on the wild side! (although girls sexy tops are a must but don't wear a short short mini skirt...that is distasteful and it has no exicitment and it is too revealing. Think revealing, but at the same time covered. The word is Mystery) Same for guys no tee-shirts or wife-beaters. Please shower and brush your teeth. Remember it is a place to see and be seen, so you don't want people to preceive you as a slob. You'd probably want people to think that you are a girl magnet not a slob who hangs with a paid escort! (a well-dressed man with a paid escort (or two) just looks more classy) The magic word is appearances!

This is not a place to go without your Plantinum card if you want to get out of your mind. Economics aside, Bar Rouge is quite the place. The idea was for a few drinks and a little light conversation. Forget that, we're here to get destroyed. Barkeep, "I would like a Cosmo, Mango Drop and a Dry Martini." " Sorry, the Martini will be at least an hour " ."Ok, give me a bottle of Bollinger and 4 glasses". "Execellent choice sir, how would you like that Martini?" So, as the night progressed and the amount of silver champagne buckets increased, Bar Rouge took on another guise. 6 Bottles of Champagne later and cocktails to beat the band, the only thing I can really remember is the low key method of dispensing their champagne, i.e. a bottle on ice presented in a bucket of fire?? Now , remember there were no drugs involved. For a good old fashioned capitalist pig of a night out go to Bar Rouge, laugh at the French, and drink yourself into economic collapse. A bientot Bar Rouge.

One word: POSH More words: Their brunch isn't bad when you consider that it comes with a nice view. On the other hand, I have been to Bar Rouge at night a few times recently: my description: "a meat market well- stocked with grade-A international meat" a friend's description (paraphrased): "it reminds me of a high school dance that has grown up, people give you dirty looks just like at a high school dance" another friend's description: "I love Bar Rouge because the manager takes such good care of me, it is 'the place to be at' in Shanghai" my addendum: "for the next three months anyways, their music selection is still shite and it is full of old men" my advice: "don't forget your loot when you go and dress nice as well, nobody will give you any respect in your old jeans, cutoff T-shirt and beanie, regardless of how crazy a dancer you may or may not be, also being smashed helps with your enjoyment of Bar Rouge" Your mileage may vary ^_^

review courtesy of "bleucheese" Bar Rouge is spectacular. Especially in the pre-dinner hours....fairly empty, sedate yet tasteful decor with billowing floor to ceiling swaths of red cloth, low key moog mood tunes, nice ambient ambiance. Still with me? Vodka tonic with lime. No mention of what TYPE of vodka....a fatcat place like this and youd expect at the very least some grey goose action. Headed out to the exposed rooftop deck. With the view of the Bund and Pudong such as it is, you can get away with Absolut sparse decor. Aside from the lawn furniture and exposed 2-by-4 flooring, the only aesthetic addition to this outdoor venue was a huge Chinese flag laying claim to the patio: I loved it. Nothing to distract you from that view. 30 minutes in an awestruck trance comtemplating my Shanghai existence. Pausing only for a quick refill. A double to make the view a little more clear. I couldve stayed up on that roof freezing my nads off all night long. 65 Yuan (x3); 10 yuan tip (x2) TOTAL: 215 Yuan.
