Hai is the sequel to veteran chef Brad Turley's wildly popular restaurant
Goga. Perched on the seventh floor of The Shanghai Education Hotel, the place is 90 percent open-air terrace with sweeping views of the former French Concession. The menu is a variety of casual California-style cuisine like fresh oysters, crab cakes, and Turley's signature sliders.

Hai by Goga is a place full of contradictions. First off, it's housed in a kitchy hotel in the middle of the FFC which has golden tulip chairs in the lobby and a full-on Christmas LED light extravaganza in the parking lot.
Hai on the other hand is cool, understated and modern with a huge terrace which makes you forget the hotel instantly. Service is good, with a lot of personalized interaction with the manager and sometimes Brad himself; however food came out a bit slow. Hai is definitely a place to chill and unwind as opposed to the typical Shanghai eating experience; everything coming all at once and yelling "Fu Wu Yuan" at the top of your lungs.
The food was stellar. The salad, fried risotto balls with miso dressing and sliders were all satisfying. While the food was decidedly American, the portions were not, so at the end of the evening we still had room for the decadent chocolate mouse and fruit cobbler.

Was pleasantly surprised by both the food and the view/terrace/ambience here - once we had found it. It's behind Goga, but needs better signage - inside the odd hotel, and up in the lifts which aren't sign-posted, and then through an unmarked door: and suddenly there's a charming little terrace and restaurant. As with my one visit to Goga (a while back), the service was haphazard and the staff really need some training on how to present the menu. It has the same flawed - in my opinion - sharing menu concept. I say flawed because, as with Goga, this isn't well explained by the menu or the staff, so it's very confusing to know what to order, how much etc. But also, the dishes in the main don't seem to lend themselves to sharing in the way that, say, a typical tapas menu does. We thought we'd ordered two starters and two mains, but then only one dish came out and then we were told it was a sharing concept. We had to insist on the other one being brought out also. But that aside, it was worth it - I really thought the quality of the dishes and the combination of flavours were excellent. And the informal but interesting ambience made for a really surprising and relaxing dinner. I expect it to be a summer terrace hit.
