Described as an 'American Cafe', Malone's is home to the most extensive burger menu in the city. Smack in the middle of Tongren Lu just around the corner from the Shanghai Center, Malone's is usually packed with expats and the out of town business crowd. Upstairs plays host to a Filipino cover band most nights, an extensive bar can satisfy any thirst, and the outdoor seating is quite appreciated during the warmer months.

I've been to both Malone's but this particular review is for the Malone's at Big Thumb Plaza in Pudong, though it is probably applicable for both locations. For the most part, I think Malone's is a good dining/sports bar option for most people.

Unfortunately, the only reason I'm compelled to write this review is due to what I consider to be a ridiculous price policy on soft drinks. For the love of all that is holy, why the heck are soft-drinks priced at 35 RMB each with NO REFILLS? Sure, they might have a combo during lunch that includes refills but is it really wise to price soft-drinks at THIRTY-FIVE KUAI each cup at all other times?

Okay, if they want to jack up the price to fleece the late-night live music and bar crowd, I might be able to understand that since its something of a norm but 35 RMB for one drink at all other times is just ludicrous. If their food was cheaper, then maybe I can accept them using drinks to make their profit but this is just distasteful.

Last time I dined her, they fleeced us the 35 RMB per drink because "it is dinner time." So, I came back for a late lunch (3pm) today and while I fully acknowledge that maybe their combo thing ends at 2pm and I missed the boat, I'm still incredibly annoyed with their soft-drink stinginess.

City Diner has much of the same options and while their 18 RMB soft-drinks aren't cheap, at least they're refillable and within Western pricing norms (US-3). This just makes Malone's look exploitive. I'm sorry, but for all the nice decor and decent food, this is probably the one reason why I will refuse to come back to Malone's ever again.
