Harrods, the largest department store in the UK, is setting up its first overseas store — in Pudong. But it won't exactly be open to everyone. The new store, called The Residence, will be limited to private shoppers, who get access to a bar and a tea room in exchange for their financial enthusiasm for luxury goods. The old, old store, founded in 1849 in London, gets 15 million visitors a year there, but it's also 90,000 square feet; by contrast, the Shanghai store is reportedly 5,000 square feet (464 square meters). Expect it to open in 2020.
