In Shanghai for over four years now. Fitness lover. Very amateur badminton player. Love reading. Sometimes I write about the little things in this big city.

At first, it looks almost too simple to be interesting: tiny plastic beads, a pegboard, and an iron. But this bead craft, known internationally as Perler or Hama beads, has quietly become one of the most popular hands-on hobbies among young people in China. Locally, it's called拼豆 (pīn dòu), and it's gone far beyond flat, pixel-style designs.

Scroll through Chinese social media, and you'll see what people are really doing with it now: 3D lanterns that actually light up, bead-made plants that don't need watering, small sculptures, and objects that feel closer to design pieces than weekend crafts. Flat designs are just the beginner level. The serious players stack layers, build curves, and engineer structures that actually hold their shape.

Part of the appeal is how undigital it feels. It's slow, repetitive, and requires focus, thousands of beads placed one by one, with no shortcuts. In return, you get something solid, colorful, and very much made by hand. It's creative without being precious, and oddly relaxing for a gneration used to endless screens.

There are plenty of studios dedicated to bead crafting. No need to buy tools or figure things out at home: most places provide everything, from beads and pegboards to design templates. You can just show up and make something of your own. Prices are friendly too, with many studios offering one-hour sessions for under 100rmb, making it a simple, low-pressure way to try out the hobby and walk away with a handcrafted masterpiece.

It's not trying to be high art, and that's kind of the point. Just small plastic beads, taken way more seriously than anyone expected, and the results are impressive enough to earn it.
