A Few Options for Easter Brunches

Praise Jeeeebus. Just a little Easter eats round up for you. Here's where to eat this Sunday afternoon and evening... buffets and such.

Hey, it's Easter Sunday again this weekend, everybody, which means it's time once again to throw on the seasonally appropriate Charlie Brown movie (it's this one), gorge yourself on a huge buffet spread, and tithe the 15% service fee to the hotel denomination of your choice. Also, if you have kids, firstly, hey, congrats, way to stick up for the human race, and also, remember, they should be doing some kind of Easter egg hunt thing or something. Friend of mine, her dad is like this big-time hippie guy, and every Easter he used to hide spliffs around his yard for his teenage kids to find. True story. That's neither here nor there but I've got to come up with a specific word count for introductions to these articles. Boom. Mission accomplished. Here's some brunch deals on for this Sunday. ***

'Eggciting' Easter Bubbalicious @ Westin Beijing Chaoyang

Good for: Hitting all the bases, ages zero to a million

Probably Beijing's most famous brunch -- or at least the one that takes most liberties with the English language -- the Westin Chaoyang is hosting their yearly "Eggciting" brunch, which is all the dining outlets at the hotel combining their efforts to produce and international buffet. You've got Seasonal Tastes doing the intercontinental cuisine, Japanese from Mai's, and BBQ from Grange Grill. Everything you could want in a hotel brunch is on there, and they're also willing and prepared to deal with your children; they've got a kids corner and will be hosting an egg hunt. Prices: 288rmb +15% per child; 488rmb +15% per person with free flow of soft drinks, beer and wine; 588rmb + 15 % with free flow of soft drinks, beer, wine and champagne. Runs 11:30am to 3pm. Reservations highly recommended: 5922 8880.

Easter Sunday Brunch @ Factory by Salt

Good for: Idiosyncratic dishes and tagging on an art tour for Sunday afternoon

Factory by Salt out in 798 art district has been quietly hosting a little community around their inventive set menus, and for Easter Sunday, Exec Chef Camila Betin is serving a three-course meal with the option of a free-flow sparkling wine on top of that. Sounds ideal for getting a little pissed with friends and then wandering around 798 for some mid-afternoon edification. It's a choice of a starter, choice of a main, and choice of a desert. Pretty simple. The full menu is available for your perusal right here, but a quick example of one of the mains if your not in the mood for hyperlinks is thus: "BEEF TENDERLOIN - Smoked sweet corn puree, carrot gratin, sautéed baby vegetables, savoury chantilly, citrus-beef jus". Lovely. It's a smaller scene at Factory by Salt -- only a handful of tables. If you're looking to avoid a whole involved hotel thing, this might be your thing. Just make sure you call ahead. Prices: The two-course option is 250rmb and the three-course is 280rmb. For three hours of "free-flow bubbly", add 150rmb. Runs 12pm to 4pm. Reservations required: 156 1108 0348 or 5762 6451.

Badr's Sunday Night Feast @ Cuju

Good for: Experiencing the Hutong version of Cheers whilst actually devouring the Easter Bunny

Going for a little eclecticism with this listical so, next, we're heading over the Cuju in Xiguan Hutong in Beixinqiao. Executive Supreme Overlord Chef Badr is putting a seasonal spin on his popular Sunday feast and cooking up a rabbit tagine as the featured dish for the evening. To take a step back a bit, if you haven't been to Cuju on Sunday evening, the rum bar/Moroccan restaurant hosts a really popular pop-up dinner sort of thing, with a rotating menu concocted earlier that afternoon by the venue's owner and chef. I walked by on a Doritos run last Sunday at about 8pm and it was at capacity seating with a good 10 to 20 people spilling over outside the venue. Anyway, this Sunday evening they dine on rabbit flesh for Easter. Delish. Price: Depends on how much you order and drink, but about 150rmb for food. Runs 6pm till 10pm-ish. Bit later for drinks. It's first-come-first-serve. Expect to wait a bit. It's a popular table.

Easter Brunch @ Capital M

Good for: Hey, maybe you just want to do it on Saturday instead.

Stately and wonderful central Beijing restaurant and cultural hub Capital M is hosting two days of seasonal Easter brunches this Saturday and Sunday. Information is pretty scant about just exactly what's on the menu, but as one of Beijing's better reviewed weekend fry-ups, you're in good hands. They do the eggs benedictine and Bloody Marys very well. And, yeah, there's a bit of convenience there -- it's on for Saturday and Sunday. A choice of a two or three-course set meal is the order of the day. Price: Two courses, including a cocktail and limitless tea or coffee, 248rmb; three courses, including a cocktail and limitless tea or coffee, 288rmb. Runs Saturday and Sunday, 11:30am to 3pm. Reservations required: 6707 2727.

Easter Brunch @ Isola

Good for: Um… it's in Sanlitun. Maybe you live there?

Meanwhile, in Sanlitun land, newish Italian-via-Hong Kong restaurant Isola is hosting an Italian cuisine-slanted brunch special with an appetizer buffet paired up with your choice of a main course. Mains include calzone pizza with ricotta cheese and vegetables, braised veal in Barolo wine, and stuffed saddle of lamb with spinach. Sounds inticing. They're toping that off with a dessert buffet. Not a bad deal and a pretty good price as well for the area. And hey, you can go see Captain America afterwards. Jesus told me it's His favorite movie of 2014. (Yeah, I've got a direct line.) Price: 168rmb +10% per person. Runs 11:30am to 2:30pm., Reservations recommended: 6416 3499.

Happy Easter @ The Fairmont

Good for: They actually have an Easter Bunny.

Could probably go on all day about options for hotel brunches for Easter Sunday, but we'll just toss this one in here and call it a day. Along with the aforementioned Bubbalicious one, this one's the other safe bet for a lavish hotel spread offered up with enough activities and diversions to keep your kids out of your damn face while you slam back some champers. The Cut in The Fairmont is doing their yearly brunch to-do, which is their seasonally-adjusted and still huge brunch buffet and lucky draws. Then, at 3pm, the festivities move over to the Lobby Lounge at which point the Easter Bunny is hosting their yearly charity egg hunt, along with a bunch of other kid-friendly activities. So that runs until 5pm, at which point the Easter Bunny is due over at Cuju to become tangine. Price: 488rmb for adults; kids from 5-12, 288rmb; free for kids under 5. The egg hunt party in the Lobby Lounge is a separate fee -- 60rmb, with all proceeds going to charity. Brunch runs 11am to 3:30pm; Easter party runs 3pm to 5pm. Reservations: 8511 3618 or faisal.majeeth@fairmont.com. ***
