New Bites: Zong Du Fu

Inside Donkey Inside. A delicious little hole-in-the-wall donkey burger place at Beixinqiao. A Hebei specialty -- Hail to the queen, baby.

Looking for more a more equine al fresco brunch option? Just step out of Beixinqiao subway exit B and make a right and you'll stumble on Zong Du Fu, a traditional wooden Chinese shop sign with the following, written with goddamn confidence in gold letters: First of all, bravo to this somehow sinister-sounding restaurant name that explains A) what animal you're about to eat and B) where you'll be eating it. FROG OUTSIDE could be it's sister shop on Guijie with spicy cauldrons of the greasy monsters stacked on stained folding tables. Exotic meats and directional prepositions. For the uninitiated, donkey burgers are a Hebei specialty dating back to the Ming dynasty that have since spread all over the country. The English translation of shaobing or huoshao as “burger” isn't quite accurate; it's more like a very crispy, unleavened pita-like bread topped with seasame seeds. It's roots are closer to doner kebab. More accurate as a “Chinese burger” are roujiamo, since the soft mo bread is more like a burger bun and is the perfect foil for the rich, fatty pulled pork. Of course, if you want to stake you claim to being the Burger Queen in boldly artistic flourishes, who am I to argue? But I digress; let's eat! Their zhaopai huoshao (specialty donkey burger - 12rmb) is what you're filling up on. It's impossibly crispy, essentially fried, bread generously stuffed with gamey, cherry-red meat and absolutely no fillers. It's the connoisseurs' ass meat sandwich. Other soldiers on the sandwich front include the menzirou huoshao (10rmb), which is a more corpulent option. Filled with North Chinese style menzi wheat jelly thickened with fat from the meat, this is a luxurious treat. I wasn't pleased with the shucai huoshao (shredded veggie burger - 6rmb) since it's basically stir-fried shredded potatoes and I don't understand the appeal of eating a dry, bland carb brick. Another specialty is the zhaopai roufan (specialty donkey rice bowl - 21rmb). Long grain rice, carrots, peas, kidney beans, shredded potatoes, a fried egg and, naturally, donkey meat in a kawaii panda head shaped clay pot. Surprisingly light and office lunch friendly. And for 30rmb, why not have order donkey dumplings to share? These are truly delicious in an unpretentious, Chinese grandma way. The dumpling skin is of a hearty thickness, competently holding generous dollops of rich meat. Check out this arousing xian'r porn. Sensual. The Take-Away: delicious, inexpensive and local. My favorite things. No English menu, but get your Chinese game together if you haven't already. (Seriously, bro.) They have generous outdoor seating and random bottles of European beers in the mini fridge, making it a great summer option. Heeeeeee-haaaaaaww! *** Zong Du Fu (Donkey Inside) is at 277 Dongzhimen Neidajie, Beixinqiao Station, Exit B.
