New Bites: Qi Ye (Qing Tang Nan)

Reap the fields of rice and reeds, while the population feeds: Inside Qi Ye (Qing Tang Nan), the new Hong Kong soup noodle shop on Xinzhong Jie

Opened just last week amongst a swarm of fashionable young girls in bright red lipstick and guys in crisp American baseball hats hovering above their heads, here's Qi Ye, a Hong Kong soup noodles restaurant right across from GLB # 12 and next to Pho Laboratory on Xinzhong Jie. This whole street's locked in this vicious food war between noodle shops and Western burger and beer places. The opening of Qi Ye is a bold move on the part of the Asian Noodle Alliance, representing as it does the only Hong Kong-style variation on the dish in the area. Qi Ye is a simple one-room noodle restaurant, with either wooden table or bar seating, hosting about 25-30 guests. The walls are adorned in stock Hong Kong references -- Shaw Brothers and Bruce Lee posters on the wall, framed pictures of Hong Kong subway stations. Subtle nods to life down south are represented in Hong Kong condiments on the tables and drinks. Sprite in a lil' tiny guy bottle! Apple Sidra! Wait, isn't Apple Sidra a Taiwan thing? Anyway. The menu: It's a simple sheet with a few meat-based noodles and soup dishes, and the option for either thick or thin noodles in your broth. They've also got a section of rices as well, if you're looking to beef up your meal. Here's the rice dish: "7-Yeah Steamed Rice with Braised Pork - 24rmb" Sticky, fatty, salty, scrumptious. Nice chunks of braised pork fat, and a fitting rice base. A nice compliment to your noodle dish to share with someone as you both swish through the moments on your WeChats. The entry level soup noodle dish. "Noodle soup - 20rmb" Yep. Decent enough. Nice thin noodles. Tasty broth. Nice onion-y taste. Here's a beef brisket variation with the thick noodles: "7-Yeah Noodle with Stewed Beef Brisket - 32rmb" Very tasty. Big beef brisket chunks swimming around in there. Nice and filling for a lunch or a light dinner. Pretty simple and straightforward. *** The Take-Away: Seems like a really great place to meet Hong Kong girls. Is that a creepy thing to say? Probably. Sorry. But yeah, during the lunch rush it was just me and like 17 girls with big shopping bags slurping up noodles. Nah, it's pretty decent. If you're missing -- or yearning to experience -- the young, broke, and fashionable Hong Kong student's life, this seems like a pretty good approximation in Beijing. There's a few alright options for more substantial Cantonese and dim sum meals around town, but if you're looking for a lighter, cheaper, and maybe more youth-orientated way to express your home sickness for Hong Kong, this fits the bill. Good for lunch or a light dinner if you're in the area. Pretty cheap too: everything here including drinks for 98rmb. *** Qi Ye is opposite Opposite No.12 Xinzhong Jie, down from the Holiday Inn, right next to The Pho Laboratory. They're open daily from 11am.
