There's a new Canto restaurant that's just opened up next to The Taco Bar in Courtyard No. 4. It's called Rouge Restaurant.
...Actually, it's called Roug Restaurant.
How aggravating is that, you just open a new place and already the sign is burned out a bit. Goddamn.
Then again, it does give the place a bit of a lived-in diner sort of vibe.
Here's what it looks like inside. A pristine Hong Kong-style diner with marble everything, old pictures of Hong Kong on the walls, and spacious booth seating.
It's pretty spiffy. The owner is a Chinese guy who spent the last 25 years running a Chinese restaurant in Vancouver, Canada. He's just relocated back to Beijing and this is his first and only place in this city. Food is pan-Asian -- even branching out to some Singaporean style dishes -- with the main emphasis, of course, on flavors of Hong Kong.
There's a bit of a Dim Sum menu...
Here's the house specialties -- whole lot of abalone for you high rolling government types.
And here's the set menu, swinging you through the rest of the menu sections, which are broken down into meat, veg, and seafood dishes, as well as healthy rice and noodles-base sections. This is a pretty good snapshot of what you're looking at.
Stopped by for dinner last week and just sort of grazed around the menu, MaGuyvering a meal out of a few of the dim sum items and their noodles. Feast your eyes.
From their dim sum menu, the roe and shrimp dumplings. Not bad, not bad...
Some simple shrimp spring rolls. Crisp and tasty.
A very delectable beef and potatoes pot dish... thumbs way up on this guy right here. Beautiful cuts of meat. Delicious and fatty.
Rounding it out, as a stomach-filler we got a noodle dish, which was a pickled cabbage and noodles thing...
...which was so good we ordered another variation. The Singapore Fried Rice Noodles...
Most excellent. Best noodles I've had in a while. Stringy deliciousness.
The Take-Away: Wow, this is a great restaurant. Really good. Not even "I'M TACO" good, like for real, for real good. Clean, fresh, and crisp flavors. Great service, clean environment, and fairly priced as well. We got all this plus beer for 198rmb. Heartily recommended.
Nice to have this option in Courtyard No. 4 for a casual Hong Kong diner-style meal, in amongst all the Western restaurants in the area.
