New Eats: (The New) Pinotage (Sanlitun)

A peak inside the new location for Pinotage (Sanlitun) -- A much nicer environment in which to sup liberally of red wine and meat.

The Sanlitun venue for South African restaurant and wine lounge Pinotage has found life after Sanlitun SOHO, snapping up a spot down the road on Sanlitun Lu at Dongzhimen Waidajie. That's that little sleepy stretch of shops and cafes right in the middle of all that hot embassy action. Generally speaking, that little area is seeing quite a bit of new life. Looks like some new trendy clothing boutiques have moved in, and a few of the cafes are undergoing renovations. Makes sense. Seems like it would be a prime piece of real estate for moving some units in the midst of all that important diplomacy going on in the area. But back to Pinotage. It's a small front patio, a sizable bar area, a large indoor dining area, and a covered balcony lounge. Lots of ins and outs. They're still moving in -- unpacking all those wine crates, really -- but it looks like this: We spun through the place to check it out and take advantage of their lunch menu, and, yeah, the new digs are definitely an improvement over the previous space in the sterile Sanlitun SOHO complex. It's large and versatile without being confused and haphazard. It's basically just a big, comfortable house with a few differing environments in which to enjoy great hunks of flesh and fine South African wine. Decor-wise, they've moved all the stock Africa-ness down the street -- wild animal paintings, sociocultural photography and literature, tribal artifact bric-a-brac -- as well as the stately wood and leather high-backed banquet furniture, but it's not overly masculine or tacky. Maybe give it a week or two for them to get fully moved in, but with their open airy spaces, it's one to think about for some summer dining and drinking. Food is basically the same with a few new ones thrown in. If you need a refresher, or if you've never been, Pinotage does "contemporary South African", which is indigenous African dishes and flavors intermixed with some more recent influences via Dutch, German, and English sources. There's a ton of meat on offer: Oxtail bone marrow, pork confits, Biltong carpaccio, chicken liver parfaits, lamb shanks, and this, the Ostrich Burger (48rmb): It's a slab of Ostrich meat on a bun. Looks gnarly. Looks really gnarly. It's pretty tasty. It's like very, very tender beef. Your teeth sink right through this thing. These are also great too. Bobotie Samosas (48rmb). Minced meat in a delicate and flaky shell. Really tasty. Came with a chutney. Think it was like an apricot chutney or something. Thumbs up on this guy right here. Pinotage also does wine. I guess it's the largest list of South African wines in Beijing? Think they had some magazine awards on the wall for wine, I don't know. I'm not going to front like I know anything about wine, but, hey, I do know about shit that is cheap. Monday to Friday from 5pm to 7pm, they have 15rmb glasses of red and white wines -- 4 different varieties of each. That seems like a real good deal... *** 12 Dongzhimen Waidajie, Dongmen Building, opposite the Qatar Embassy. They're open daily from 11am to 2am. 5785 3538.
