Good-times pie delivery company Rager Pie just opened up their first counter top in Beijing last weekend. They're slinging a tidy game in personal pies and specialty coffee in Fensiting Hutong. Now, if you want to come out from behind your computer, you can go get your pies in person. And some very nice coffee.
The Rager Pie shop/cafe is a one-room, blink-and-you-miss-it, two-table deal right across from popular restaurant Zhang Mama. Most of the above pictures are close-ups because between me and my beer belly, it was basically at capacity. It's tiny, tiny, tiny. But DAMN is it ever charming, that's for sure.
Backing up: Rager Pie is a husband-and-wife pie and coffee delivery service which started out just as a making-pies-for-friends'-parties kind of thing ("ragers"), before moving online as a commercial delivery service, and now this is their first counter top. It's basically this one American dude and his wife with a fistful of pie recipes, running the whole thing, from baking to delivery. In my capacity as SmartBeijing.com's official pie correspondent, I've previously Cage-Rated all the sweet pies, which you can check out right here if you want.
The Pies:
Since doing the afor-linked article, Rager Pie's menu has expanded up into four varieties of sweet pies and six varieties of savory. There's now three sizes available: 4", 6", 9". The one's pictured below are the 4-inchers. Now, if you stop by the shop, they've got a big swath of the 4-inchers available. If you want to take home the 6" or the 9", you order in advance through the website or by calling them. The turn-around time is three hours, depending on how busy they are. All pies are made on-site.
So if you're just rolling to the shop to get a snack, you're looking at these 4-inchers.
Lamburger Pie - Ground lamb, onions, mushrooms, mashed potatoes and gravy (40rmb)
A very hearty mash and lamb combo, ideal for a quick snack after a long afternoon spent TCB'ing on the planes of Mongolia.
Frito Pie Pie - Our own take on the classic (40rmb)
A Southern USA thing. Texas chili with some Fritos and melted cheese. Fritos taste like Jesus' toenails. (Divine.)
Chicken is a Color - Chicken pot pie (35rmb)
Nice balance between some chicken bits and veg, and their crust recipe, which is a very wheat-y whole wheat.
Breakfast Quiche - Sausage, egg, arugula (30rmb)
Bonus round: the "Breakfast Quiche". This one's available only in the mornings from 7am to 10:30am, and comes with the option of adding a coffee for 15rmb. I just had this one this morning. Carpe diem, eh?
To use official pie judging terminology: it was fuckin' delicious.

Coffee:
Okay, on to the coffee. This is a whole involved thing on its own. Via Gospel Coffee Roasters, Rager Pie is stocking third-wave style artisinal bean blends from plots around the world (Mendling, Yingacheffe, Kenya, Costa Rica, Guatemala...).
This term, "third wave coffee", is like a coffee imbibing ethos kinds of thing in which the beverage is cast in the same regard as wine or craft beer. It's not really coffee that you slam with a bunch of milk and sugar. There's "tasting notes" and "flavor profiles" and stuff like that involved. Serious stuff.
Option are espresso style (two types of espresso roast for each bean variety), and hand-pour, single-source coffee (250mL), which is done on your table in some intense grind and drip machine. Prices: 16rmb-30rmb for the espressos. 28rmb-34rmb for the pours.
Here's one of the espressos...
...which apparently working really well because I've basically chewed my fingers down right to my palms and g-=4tnitb4tq3=UY*)H08h.&*U8.
Booze:
They're "trying to resist the urge to become a bar", so as of now there's no alchohol available on menu. They've got a couple left over cans of beer from their opening party, and this bottle of angry-looking liquid...
...which is "Rager Juice", and best applied directly to your person, to the aforementioned cans of beer, or to your bike wheels if they happen to be squeaking.
Don't rage alone indeed. Rager Pie: great little pie-guy snacks, gorgeous coffee, quirky, little environment, nice folks running it. A great addition to the neighborhood. I give it 9 million raging Nicolas Cages out of a possible 7 million.
On finding the place:
There's currently no signage for Rager Pie. You're looking for a wooden door that looks like this:
It's in Fensiting Hutong, about 10 steps down from Zhang Mama on the other side, coming in from Andingmen. Rage on...
Also, I couldn't figure out a way to shoehorn this in anywhere so I'm just going to link it here outright: Brain Candy - Happiness Pie.
